Serenity Reef

Where have you guys been?
It's been a month and my frags are settling in great.
The original batch of frags have survived perfectly and are encrusting the putty.
Added a couple of others from a trip interstate as you can see from the fresh white putty.
Over all I am happy with it....
Last week I went away again and have another week to go with vacation.
There have been two small dramas since I've been away. But managed to talk them through with the tank sitter. (No auto top up working , no skimmer working )
She has no fish tank experience what so ever so I can only hope to come back to live SPS
Since this might be a disaster upon arrival home I can share with you a quick photo I took of my reef two weeks ago.
Chat soon .....

Looking good, I love the aquascape. That overhang on the right side is really cool. Your new corals look like they are doing well.

Cheers for stopping by @cFloor and cugly!
The last rock addition created that cool overhang you mentioned.
The small rock at the back left has three colours of birds nest scattered over it.
That green pocci and Dallas on the birds nest rock don't quite belong there but I stuck them there to create a bit of tension for my eye.
Things can't always be harmonious and this bit of discord might kind of work - let's see...
The rest of the scape is easy ... Some blue and yellow tenius on the flat rock to grow out.
On the front overhang assorted acros...
On the right big overhang reserved for Millie's , we have red and purples and tri colours.
At the back a collection of Stags!!!

Mate, the FTS looks great! SPS look like they've held their colours too

Whats the filtration on the tank? Rocks/sand/skimmer?
Are you dosing anything?
How are you supply ca/Alk?
Running GFO/GAC?

This is going to look stunning in 6-9 months time.

Thanks for the kind words!
Great questions mate....
Yes we have rocks, sand and skimmer to remove the dead bacteria.
Dosing the tank with Zeovit blue bottles , no secrets here :smokin:
Passive Zeo stones for now as not got round to getting a reactor yet.
I have most of the Zeo products in hand but settling the tank in for now.
Products currently dosed.
Following dosing as per bottle instructions.
Start3
Bac
Amino Acid
Coral vitaliser
PIF
Pohls Extra
Sponge Power
Bio mate.

Will start using the other products as I start to build a routine.

Using Calcium Reactor for Alkalinity and since this is a bacteria driven system, no need for GFO/ GAC

Thanks for the info. Looks like its working well for running zeolites passive. Keep the thread updated with photos please. :)

No worries mate. My opinion about the passive running of the stones is they still make a marked difference as opposed to not running the stones.
The stones were recently put in as the SPS frags were dormant for at least 2 to 3 weeks. I noticed the corals went pale after the addition of the zeolite.
Been working towards getting the colour back, however with so much going on in such a brand new tank it's going to take time.

Things that are dialled in are the lights and frankly that's about it.
Temp is swinging like a pendulum, so I've moved the heater temporarily into the display.
The salt using Instant Ocean - I like it about 8/10
Only dislike is KH is 10.3 dKH
Calcium Reactor had it going great and set but water changes affect my goal KH so for now it's off line and being turned on by the house sitter!
I worry about it since there are three knobs for her to twist and only one of the three needs to be opened:confused:

Arrived home to find the tank doing just fine- no visual major dramas that I can see.
A bit of algea bloom due to me writing some dosing instructions out wrong.
I realise now after my vacation how physically and mentally exhausted I was.

Spent the past weekend tidying up some issues in the sump and installing a bigger Maxspect Gyre.
Now have the 130 on the left side of the tank and 150 on the right.

Wrote out a new plumbing shopping list and heading to the hardware store to get some fittings and pipe as Version 1.0 plumbing is not quite right.

Catch up later Reefers.

Could I get opinions on a skimmer please.
Got my tank running very quietly these days.
My four year old skimmer is on it's way out due to noise.
Currently looking at Tunze 9410 as that will fit the footprint of available space
(Wide 7inch 18cm length 14inch 36cm)

How quiet are these- do they hum at all?
Anyone got any experience with these?

FTS looks nice. Regarding the skimmers, there is a review/comparison by AmericanReefChannel on YT.

Very nice tank! Well done!

As for skimmers check out the Lifereef thread. I have one and it's the last skimmer I'll ever buy.

Hello Reefers,
Thanks to all those who left a comment in the Serenity journal.

@Sahin- I just remembered that I never showed you my latest sump plumbing...Ill do so hopefully today. There will be more to add in the mechanical plant room soon though with the arrival of a new skimmer.
@Michael B - thanks buddy!!!
@reefmutt - thanks for liking the scape.
@Xixau - Cheers mate your frags are kicking along nicely here.
@Shaggss- Well spotted, that cable certainly found itself in the wrong spot. you got to be really careful when taking photos around such eagle eyed members of Reef Central. LOL!!!!

As for the tank- I mentioned about a month ago my skimmer was making some unusual noise. Turns out that the skimmer impeller cracked on the shaft causing a rust bubble split.
Having no choice but to remove the skimmer, the tank has been this way for a month.

Just checked tracking and seems that the skimmer has cleared customs!!!!
The decision was made to purchase a Coral Box DC 500 from Hong Kong..... well it has to be better than running nothing at all.

Since not running a skimmer and coincidently my feeling is the T5 are due for changing -The overall current look of the tank is not quite there atm.

Serenity Reef will bounce back though.
