Shallow reef tank Club

Awsome looking tanks you guys got there...

I want to set up a shallow under 20" Tall reef tank and have several options to go with, wich one would you guys suggest?

30x30x20 77g not that shallow

30x30x18 70g shallow cube

30x30x16 62g shallow cube

36x30x16 74g shallow tank.

I really like the shallow cube design/set up

Need your input PLEASE!!

Need your input PLEASE!!

Thanks GSMguy for starting this thread! I happen to search google for a shallow reef tank setup for some views of tanks. I came across this thread, i am glad to see that there are others doing what i am about to do and are successful!

So here is the deal... I have a 60X24X12 tank that i will be moving my current setup into. I have never had such a shallow tank but i am excited... my concerns are listed below. Could others that have similar size tanks hieghts voice their expriences with my concerns?

1. If i do a SSB will i have issues with sand constantly sturing up due to current from four 1" flow accelorators being pushed via Dart pump.
2. How close should i have lights to the water they will be enclosed in a 14" Hood?

brief info on tank setup.

Mixed Reef... mainly SPS

I have a Dart that pushes water through a oceans motions little squirt with 1" piping and flow accelerators for outputs.

Light setup I have a aqua medic 2x250 MH and 4 48" t5 will this be to much light and if not at what height would yall recommend to have the lights off the water?

I have never had a shallow tank and i do not want to bleach the corals.... should i start with shorter photo periods and work up to normal lighting times?

Thanks for any and all input! I can't wait to get this tank setup and going!

That is a nice setup, have you thought about maybe a black background? It would look really nice, also I would try to do something about those "caution signs from your lights" they really take away from the tank.
Nice to see some BB tanks too.

Actually, I just changed the lights over to T-5's this weekend. Had the lens of one of the Vipers crack on me causing some of the UV rays get through from the HQI bulb burning a couple acans and paly's. Must of been cracked for a few days before I noticed it becasue my anemones kept moving around which was strange. Should have known better.

Here's a pic of the new light on the tank with only the actinics on. I'm please with the way it looks.

NOTE: This is reply # 666 on this thread. Does this mean I'm the Devil? :)

I have 2 (well 1 and 1 more in the works!). The first is a 24x24x11.5" that us my zoanthid prop system, and the new one is 36x24x16".
A question for you all, I cantdecide if I want to build a canopy for the new tank or go pendant. The canopy would likely be taller than the tank, as I will be running MH and want to make sure to allow 10-12" of headroom between the bulband the water. I am worried that this tall canopy will look off. However, the tank is not rimless or eurobraced, just old fashioned acrylic-build top with a large hole, so I am not sure how it would look with a pendant. I suppose with this shallow of a tank I could cut the top out mostly and leave a euro-style brace.

Not quite done yet, but you get the idea.

Finally UP and Running!

Finally UP and Running!

Thanks Insane, just finished this last weekend moving from a 100 gallon to this shallow 80 gallon... I am really happy with this shallow tank!

hahaha. I will never be able to post pics of my tank in this thread

however, maybe once my frag tank (36x18x18) gets a bunch of corals in it I will post that.

maybe using rocks with holes drilled instead of typical egg-crate shelves could make the frag tank more of another display...
although i guess eggcrate shelves in frag tanks are also to keep the flow going and prevent detritus. Could be done either way I guess

Hey.. IF you want to do frags on live rock i suggest grabbing some 2 part aquarium epoxy. Kneed up a little.. stuff it in a hole that is a little bit too big for the stem of your frag plug, then stuff the plug down on top of it... wiggle it around a little and let it set.
what you'll end up with is a cool little hole exactly the same size as a reef plug stem. Just wiggle the plug a little and it will come right out...

So for you shallow reefers running canopies and MH, can you post up pics of the canopy? I want to run canopy and MH but with my tank only 16" tall I am worried about the canopy looking weird if I build it tall enough to give proper distance between the light and the water. Most reflectors are about 5-6" tall, so if I build the canopy the height of the tank (16") that will give 10-11" off the water. Do you think a 16" tall canopy on a 16" tall tank will look weird?

Evoracer

You can't see my hood in my pic... My wife lost my camera cable so i can't take better pictures with the digi... ( looking for cable ) But my stand consists of a 21" tall base so that the tank is perfect for sitting heigth and the there is the 12" tank and and a 14" hood. I have a 4 - 48" t-5 and a aqua medic dual 250 MH in the hood. I also have 4 120 mm pc fans blowing across the water to keep the heat out of the hood. My chiller may turn on once for about a minute all day. tank stays stable at 81 degress.
