how tall is your cabinet?

Yep, they make a really nice product and are very polite and professional.

Same experience I had

You and I are only a few that can say that about Glass Cages. I had zero problems from them.

Many do have nice things to say.

Maybe we just got lucky?

I've heard so many mixed opinions about them, but after talking with them on the phone for a bit it was easy to make the decision to go with them. Like I said the product is great and I even had an opportunity to check out some of the other tanks on the truck that people were picking up, ranging from very small to very large their product and quality of product is very good and very consistent.

I'm happy with my GC 60x24x17

this is my shallow reef. I built it using 1/2 acrylic. the whole tank measure 48 x 16 x 18. But the reef part is 36 x 16 x 18. Its been running for 8 months or so. I wanted a bigger tank but she said no but you can put one here on the counter top between the kitchen and living room. But she started to like it so much, I get to have a bigger tank now. This time I'm going to build it using glass. I want a 48 x 24 x 21.

anyway.

lighting is 2/ 150 15k xm overdrive with 250 ballast with 4 39wt t-5 actinic.

about 2 week ago I've been playing around with lighting.
now 2/150 20k xm overdrive with 250 ballast with 4 t-5 actinic overdrive with icecap 660 ballast. I think it's little too blue. probably keep the overdrive actinic and go back to 15k xm.

MAD..thanks for the advice
i have been getting some quotes.
i got one with 1/2 '' acrylic for $398, not too bad .

There's a local LFS which has a frag tank set-up as a shallow reef - 12" tall. I always liked that look. Then I find this thread and as the year went by - the countless times I've pulled out the ladder to reach corals and or other things on the sand bed - plus, a 15" x 15" cube build for the office has convinced me that shallow is the way to go. So this year I will be building a new home display - shallow reef.

My initial thoughts are 45" x 30" x 16" which comes in at 93 gallons. I currently have 2 Lumenbright Large Pendants - exploring Elos EPower pendants instead as initial chatter suggests 150w = 250w with standard pendants; though, no formal tests to date.

Some questions:

1) Circulation: What do you have/would you do different? I don't want to have bare spots which result from trying to push to much circulation and to shallow water.
2) Water Height: If the tank is 16" tall should the water level be 15"? What's to close to the rim on a rimless tank?
3) Other: Given your present arrangement, is there anything you would have done differently and why?

Thanks in advance.

OK...
I have sand in the tank.
I just got the tank filled with SW.
I put a few pieces of live rock in.
I added my "new to me" ASM-G3 recirculating skimmer
I built my light rack ( no lights yet)
Tank is 72" x 30" x 16" tall

No major problems ....yet

Thanks for looking

Thought I would update my progress. I have added some rock and a few corals. Still messing around with the aquascaping till I find an arrangement that I like and gives good flow. Here are the updated photos. Sorry about the "blue tint". Will have to work on my photo skills also.

winland........That is a really stunning tank now. Cant wait to watch the progress.

Gentlemen -

I may very well be joining your club in the near future. Looking at a 48"x30"x19" glass tank. I've read darn near every page (skipped a couple in the middle) & I haven't noticed the subject of lighting discussed much.

On a tank sized such as I described, would 2x250w Radiums in Lumen Bright Wide Mini Reflectors (16"x16") supplemented with 4x54w T5 ATI Blue Plus be sufficient lighting?

Also, would 2xMP20 Vortechs be ample flow for SPS in addition to the return (which I suspect would be 450-600gph). I've never had Vortechs, but I assumed placing each on opposite ends of the tank & alternating flow would be sufficient???

Please let me know as I have not had a large/shallow tank before.

You build plans are looking good. The lights should be more than enough and should be able to run the lights high off the tank if needed. At 19" it doesn't take much to penetrate that depth. I'm not sure if the mp20's will be enough depends o. What your keeping. The upgrade to the mp40 is cheap and easy though. Sounds good let's get the ball rolling:)

winland, did you have any particular challenges aquascaping with those dimensions?
