Shallow reef tank Club

Hi Everyone, iv been reading the forum for a year now and in the hobby for over eight years and thought it would be a good time to join seeming I'm starting a new build, I finished my welding on my tank stands today ,and will paint them tomorrow .I will also pick up my 3/4" acrylic tomorrow and start welding the tanks. There will be 2 8'x4'x14' shallow reefs .Iv built one tank a foot higher to allow for a water fall of sorts. There will be a 240g sump 40g quarantine tank 6 x 400w mh 1400k 16x 6foot t5s, and a large 6 inch pipe from the taller tank to the lower tanks with holes cut out on top every six inches for mangroves.

I've been debating my new tank a long time, finally got started and glad to see others have had great success with similar shapes.
Mine's a 48"X48"X20"H. Will be lit by LED's and in-wall.
Just getting started, here's the glass after delivery.

Viewing pane in-wall will be starphire, can you pick it out in the stack?

I'm at the "framing the hole in the wall" stage and wondered something. My former tank is 26"H 150 had a larger "viewing height" than my shallow, only 20"H so what do you all think is the best height above floor for a shallow 20" tank?

It was a local place - Panhandle Glass Production.
I think they ordered it since it was special size, and they didn't have any Starphire, so for sure had to order that. I daresay that in Spokane there's dozens of places that could get it for you.

Well folks, the tank I originally found, was sold out from under me. I did score a free 20 long and 10g today from a different CL user. Both still had the stickers on them. Never used. Guess that still counts as a shallow tank 36x12x12 haha

Not too sure if I will use the 10g as a sump or make the 20L into a AIO.

Either way, I'm excited to be back in the hobby!

That sounds like it's going to be excellent (link a build thread if you do one!)

Will the top tank flow into the tank below it?
A local guy around here got a set up like (I think from a big box pet store that closed a location) it was VERY cool looking like that, though he did say that sometimes it was hard to deal with the noise of the water going from tank to tank.

iv started a build thread but have nothing to add other then a a couple coats of paint to the frame .My acrylic was delayed to monday so iv been trying too wait patiently. The top tank will over flow into the bottom ,possibly over a rock water fall but no promises on that[might be a bit more then i can chewlol] There will be a six inch pipe running from the tall tank to to the lower tank along the back wall with a slow flow where il plant mangroves for extra filtration.Im not worried about noise because its in the garage.I have a couple couches in there and a small tv.Kind of my little get away from the wife and kids. Its a great place to go when the bachelor is on

I got rid of most when I moved to New Mexico. And there is only one LFS that is 93 miles away.

I like it with less rock though.

I agree it looks awesome without all that rock. It's to bad you don't live back here in Ohio anymore. We have a killer reef club now!

That's my tank. It is 1" and those are Tunze nanos the cords hang on the tank and help support them, the magnets are only rated to .5" and will fall if disturbed. That said they work a hell of a lot better than a vortech would.

I did plan on adding MP-10s in dry boxes but decided to wait till I upgrade to glass.

I love this thread I have a GC 36x37x18 rimless that I love but.... That upgrade itch is there does anyone have a thought on a 48x48x16 rimless also by GC ideas for flow lighting stocking etc. Or would the tank just look stupid lol
