Shark ID

Went fishing at Cape Lookout National Seashore (OBX, NC) this weekend.

Couldn't keep the sharks off my line at certain points of the day. All were less than 12" total length. That's a size 12 footprint print for reference.

What kind of sharks were these?

Does anyone keep these in captivity or do they grow incredibly fast?

I have caught tons of sharks before but these really surprised me by their strength to size ratio. I had them in one hand and I was having to hold on pretty tight to keep them from writhing out. Beautiful yet terrifying creature IMO

Looks like a baby Smooth-Hound of some type. There's almost 30 species of them, and they can grow to around 5-6' in total length.

Looks like sharpnose. Not a great record in captivity. Must be kept in groups and high strung. Only know of one person that had success with them.

It's got the same black line on the leading edge of the upper caudal fin as a Sharpnose, same wall-eyes.

Thanks to you both.

It does in fact look like a sharpnose after looking at lots of different pictures on the web. I figured they got absolutely huge.

I have not ever wanted to keep a shark until I was holding that one. That won't be the species though!

Thanks again,

You could do a Horned or Epaulette shark if you're gung-ho on it. They don't get terribly large and are fairly easy to care for, provided you're able to give them the space they need.

Oh it's a long ways off...I have some desirable fish on my list currently that are a bit more realistic for me.

Thanks for the ID I was just mainly curious to know what was in the NC waters and how big they get, what they naturally eat, etc.
