Shark tank updates

If your really doing this, please skip sinking anything in the pool and leave it bare. 1 scratch in the shark can kill it, not like putting a 20' shark in a small pool isnt helping much either.

Thanks for the advice. I was at the aviation museum and they had a inflatable f22 which you can sit in for sale. Maybe I will use that it has no sharp edges.

That metal filter canister alone makes it a no go. First, the salt will rot it out in a very short time. Secondly, any metal exposure to the water will be lethal to sharks. At a minimum you would need to totally revamp the filtration system, not just to remove any metal components, to also upgrade the filtration to handle the needs of the animals. A quick off the cuff estimate, you will need to sink about 8 thousand dollars into the filtration system...that figure assumes your capable of performing the work yourself to plan the system and install it. Quadruple that figure if you need a professional like myself to do it for you. Should you want to discharge to the ocean, you will need permits from the DEC...not easy to get, especially for a private individual. It will be required to treat the discharge water, which will also require filtration systems for the effluent. As for shark species, stick to dogfish and sandbar sharks. As for "sting" rays, your stuck with skates locally.

The pool filter is rated for fresh and saltwater pools. My girlfriends parents wanted the option when saltwater pools were the fad. I used to work for the DEC at Lake Erie, I will have no problems getting any permits, if neccary. I was talking to a friend of mine from the DEC and he told me if I take a rehab shark he might be able to get me funding.

Dogfish sharks are cool. I am also a fan of the beer. I find skate eggs on the beach, can I hatch them? I also put a divider in the pool so I can build a refugium. Thanks for your advice.

If sharks were easy keepers, or if you could just fill a pool with ocean water and pump it through pumps designed for chlorinated freshwater don't you think a bunch of people would be doing it?

Why even bother having them in the pool in the first place? Viewing them will be difficult if not impossible.

No I don't think more people will have sharks in the situation you put forward. The shark is not the limiting factor it's the pool. How many people do you know has an extra pool lying around. The filter is also made for salt water pools. People enjoy looking at fish from above. Why do you think people have koi ponds, arowana ponds, stingray ponds and more? If you only like looking at fish from the side that's fine, but that is not everyone's preference. Plus I am a scuba diver.

You don't think a pool is better then the 180 gallon tanks people keep them in?

I finished filling the pool and put a divider in it. In the next few day I will start to gather organisms for the Refugium. Anything in particular I should get? I am thinking seaweed, plankton, sand crabs and killies.

Here is a preview of Sundays installment of my shark tank. Hopefully I can get the sharks in by the start of shark week.

It's still metallic and a no no for shark culture. Also it's still undersized for what is needed for keeping marine life. You need substantial mechanical, biological and chemical filtration for what your talking about. What you have currently is just plain inadequate.

BTW counting on former employment in an upstate district of the DEC for obtaining the necessary discharge permits in the marine district might not work as well you seem to think. I also wouldn't count so much on the idea of funding for "rehab", you would also have to show the ability to do such in order to obtain funding...

i think a killer whale is really a must have with this setup

I spoke to the filter company and they said that it is lined in fiber glass and it will be ok. Does this sound right? If not I was going to switch to a 500 gallon plastic water jug, like the ones farmers use.

How much biological filtration will I need for a spiney dogfish shark ? From what I gather they stay under 5 feet. With a 500 gallon sump and 50 feet by 3 feet refugium I still won't have enough biological filtration. People keep similar sized sharks such as a bamboo in much smaller tanks with less filtration.

Did you read my question about the skate eggs. Will they hatch in my tank? What kind of care will they need?

This guy is by far the biggest idiot that I've seen on here yet....

Are personal insults allowed on this site? Will I get an infraction if I tell him he was an idiot?

And you were SOO convincing until your misspelled your alma mater. :hmm3:

What are you reef central spell checker? It sounds like you are post padding. By the way "so" only has one O. It should be until YOU (not your) misspelled your alma mater.

Sometimes people make a jackass of themselves when they try to act smart and they really aren't. I made a typo spelling Cornell, they still didn't take my diploma away. You have an ivy league diploma? Nobody likes a hater or a spell checker.
