I love how...creepy this one is. It is definitely unique. I cant find the build thread on it. Is that box with the portal on the side a fuge?

FFrankie,

Can you post details of your light mounting. I love the look, very clean!
They are just ceiling fan mounts with down rods. The great thing about it is the ball allows me to move the lights out of the way when working in the tank. All the wires go up to the attic through the down rods. I nailed a 2x4 above each pendant between the joists and screwed the fan mounts into it through the sheet rock. Then drilled a hole through that for the wire to feed up. Pretty simple. Just like hanging a ceiling fan without the wire box.

i like the running shoes next to the tank it adds a certain...touch to it.. LOl.. Nice stand. I like how the tank is recessed down in it..

lol...i put those there just for this picture to really give it a good "kick". and the safety glasses are there to remind everyone to wear your PPE when you should. and not sure why i put the lexan right there...

probably just to lazy to put it in the garage where it belonged like all the other stuff on the cabinet

thanks Bamm Bamm!

FFrankie,

Almost done. I am still thinking about adding the black walnut you see on the bottom of the stand around the edge of the bottom of the tank.

All the filtration is behind the tank in the garage. Other then possible fans up top I think it is finished.

Love the lights! And the notion of completely hidden filtration is just too cool for school, but honestly, I'd all some sort removable 3 sided skin and/or doors to the stand. It would provide a space for storage.

Or perhaps books or decorations.

Not to dog you, but I've never like open bottom stands as your eye is drawn to the open space below the tank and pump and now the sheer awesomeness that will be your tank!

Hello OneFiddy,
I have thought about skinning it but the wife says nay. I am going to put a false blank wall in the back to hide that pump I think though. In person the empty space really does not look so empty. Especially since I added corals back to the system.
Thanks for your comments though! :)

Great work all. I love that I can combine my passions of saltwater fish keeeping and woodworking.

Some helpful hints for those working with stained stains.

- Do the research online. There are many great woodworking sites that offer invaluable research on pre-stain treatment, staining, topcoating, etc. Too many times have I done a project just to jack it up with crappy finishing!

- I know most people only have access to Home Depot or Lowes, but if you can, search out better quality product. I'm CRAZY for any of the products by General Finishes. They are maybe a couple of bucks more than Minwax stuff, but LIGHT years better in quality. Their waterbased stains go on line butter and their Polycrylic topcoat is phenomenal. I use the gloss (even though it's more like semi-gloss) and sand thoroughly between coats with 400 paper and tack fully before application of the next coat with a foam brush or HVLP gun. I typically do 4 top coats. You can get it online at Rockler or Woodcraft. It will make your stands shine!

- Another thing I would do with stained stands is the following:

apply the stain, do NOT sand, apply the first top coat after the first top coat is dry, apply either a water based gel stain or glaze (say dark brown or black paint thinned out with glaze medium you can pick up at lowes or home d). The glaze or gel stain will work its way into the recesses and moldings. You then wipe away the rest just leaving the darker finish in the crevasses. Sand with 400 and then apply your remaining top coats. This process gives a depth of finish like you wouldn't believe.

Obviously, it's all about the desired finish effect, but hopefully these tidbits might help someone and that's really what this forum is all about eh?
