Show Us What You Have Collected!

you just need a fishing license! Bag Limit: 20 organisms per person per day; only 5 of any one species allowed within the 20-organism bag limit.

check that out. If you get anything that has substrate attached ( zoas, ricordea, gorgs) BE CAREFUL! only 1/4" of substrate allowed and you have to use a flexible blade no bigger then 2" (putty knife).

Always my favorite things to collect were Angelfish, zoanthids, and ricordea. Fish are a challenge, but very easy once you get the technique.

C'mon people, 18 replies and not a single showing of what you've collected.......:p

Here you go! My Sargassum shrimp lol

I agree fully. Always better safe than sorry.

I've held various permits in TX, MN, LA and FL. Part of the stipulations on one of the permits I used to have was making a call in to their office and notifying them of where we were going to be that day, what we were doing, number of people involved and when we would be wrapped up.

I do know Kara and Philip. We did some filming/collecting work together for Nat Geo last year in the Keys. Very cool crew.

Nice !

I've heard they were on one of the shows. I think showing how to collect. but don't have the Nat Geo channel

Tricky guy here. I have seen what kind of bite they can deliver, NOT fun. Especially after you "fling" it off your hand 15ft in the air from your reflexes.

Nice. How did you capture that elusive creature? Did you need a deepwater submarine? Curious minds want to know:crazy1:

:D

I used the difficult lean and grab method... While trolling the weeds and getting constant hits on mahi at about 10 miles out from the reef. There was a slow down and I "leaned" over and "grabbed" a couple handfuls of Sargasso weeds. I shook it intensely until I found this guy flopping at the bottom of the bucket. Then quickly got another bucket with ocean water in it and poured it inside where the shrimp was. It was a good day. Also got water for my WC ;)

And no, no deep water sub... Just a 2002 Hydra-Sport 2596 Vector Series with Twin 200 Yahama Four-stroke :spin3:

Don't feel bad, I don't get it either. I wait until they show up online so I can see what we looked like. Haha
I forget what all we shot that day we were out. Puffers were on the list, but we did a few episodes on one afternoon.

Kara and I with Francis on our way out:

Nice shots! I'll have to check out it out one of these days then.

Im in Tampa! I used to live in Summerland key, then Marathon for awhile. The thing with butterflies is be persistent at ONE, and I chase from above. This causes them to go around rocks or sponges without darting off. I keep the net behind them and spook them back into it. One of the best advice I learned for ANY fish is to not move the net to the fish, move the fish to the net. I can catch a few dozen butterflies in a single dive with two people. When I go by myself I usually get half as many as I try for. Snorkeling kinda works good in super shallow areas because they wont hear you breathing.

Banded Butterfly. These are much harder then four eye butterflies and usually don't school like them also.
Some of the coolest fish I have caught are: Spotted drum, Spanish hog, Cherub Angel (only caught one, only seen one), and Gold tail moray (not a fish, hehe)

Nice! Summerland Key and Marathon is much easier to collect/fish in, compared to key largo lol....

Thanks for the tips. I'll try it out. When I go to my shallow 8ft-15ft spots for spearfishing, I normally take a net with me just in case lol still learning and trying it out.

Great! Good luck. Also any bridges are excellent for reef fish. I used to dive the seven mile bridge every winter for inverts and fish. Whale harbor is closer to you and was always stacked every time i dove it. Just watch currents.
