Show Us Your Lionfish

Don't want to hijack a thread about my favorite fish. But the remora is about 18" long. He's a remora shark if that helps with species. He eats 5 large table shrimp or a whole tilapia fillet per feeding 4 times a week. So I would imagine bioload is high. I have to feed him on one end and the other fish on the other end. This would be my least recommended fish o any one. He spends 99% of his time stuck to the glass and thy get giant. I compare keeping one in captivity like putting a tuna in a tank. There is no way they can possibly live a normal live in a home aquarium unless your te sultan of some middle eastern kingdom and have a 10000 gallon tank. I got this one based solely on the fact I felt sorry for him. He was dropped into a tank at the lfs with a 6' tesselata eel and a nurse shark. Right when he hit the water the eel bit him in half. I figured he was a goner. When I went back to the store 3 months later his stump wasn't quite healed but he was still alive. I paid 10$ for him and brought him home and have had him about a year. In this time he has doubled in size. And gets around fine without a tail. He's definitely a conversation started and to people outside the hobby is te highlight of my tanks. But to me it's a sad reminder of the irresponsible practices in this hobby. I really feel bad for him. If I wasn't such a sofie I would have euthanized him, bc I have probably the largest tank in the area that would put up with such a creature. So for what it's worth. They're very hardy but quite boring, eat a ton, and get giant. On top of the fact that they don't live very normal lives in aquaria. Here's a full shot of him. Begging for food. Now back to the lions!

Yes. Coldwater for sure! I keep my tank at 60 currently. I also have a erosa erosa in this tank, both waiting to be moved into their 100 gallon lobster tank.

For some reason, I didn't think you were running them quite that low, but I know they're doing well for you.

These were my lions before a power outage happened while I was on vacation and they all passed.

CK had some really nice fishes for sure (as well as great photo skills). P. sphex is an awesome find if you can get one...we've got a newish 2" juvie that's almost weaned (it's eating frozen guppies and ghosties off a stealth stick now).

Our adult Hawaiian:

Any food down there?

Nope...darnit!

The sphex was fairly new in these pix...you can see that it was a little "ruff" at the time.

Everyone is getting along in a 90 long right now. It is quite a bit of work to keep up the water quality though. The end game is to transfer all of them to the 715G that is sitting in my garage waiting on a different tank build so I can free up some space.

Man those guys are huge! What size tank do you have them in.

Wish I had a 715 gallon tank sitting around in my garage. Got a tank stock list.

Awesome topic... Full of great fishes.

A couple pics of my red volitans.

The thing about vollies is that you generally don't see them as full adults in "all their glory", so that makes them a bit rare, even tho the fish itself is fairly common.

Out of all of the lions we've kept, there's still something about a foot-long aquatic puppy that you've raised from a little "peanut". These fishes are second to none in terms of sheer "presence".
