SkullV's 40 Breeder SPS Reef

Love this tank .. Just have a feeling your going to need a bigger one in a very few months lol

They all say that, but it isn't gonna happen! Hopefully around October I'll be moving to a much larger home on the other side of Phoenix and starting up a very large FOWLR. This tank will still be plumbed into the system though.

On the topic of this tank though, decided to make a change in flow. Removing the MP10 and adding a second Gyre XF150 to the opposite side of the current one. The plan is to run them on antisync for most of the day with a very turbulent pulse twice a day to stir things up.

So I've noticed that changing to the second Coral+ bulb has significantly improved the coloration of some of my red and blue acros, but it has also caused an increase in algae growth. I don't test for phos/nitrate but it's clear that there is some present. Rather than increase biopellets or phosguard volume I decided to go ahead and perform a long overdue deep clean of my refugium and return chambers. With this I did around a 25% water change (about double my normal 12%). This water change removed an unbelievable amount of detritus from the bottom of the two chambers so it will hopefully make a noticeable difference.

I'll also be doing my normal 12% water change and sand vacuuming tomorrow so hopefully within the next week or 2 the algae is gone.

Nice clean fuge chamber:

Wow.. Clean as a whistle!
Nice new frags!
Will you ever test for n and p?

Thanks! I do have a friend coming over to pick up some frags that will be testing my n and p. I'm a little nervous to find out what the tests will show!

Very nice build. Subscribed.
What sand is that?

Beautiful corals. Subscribe!

Thanks guys!

Wow this is awesome. Love how much diy you did. Have you thought about doing a display refugium to show off those eufelia?

No display fuge. I would like to, but I am just not interested in maintaining two tanks again! I've done them in the past and enjoyed them quite a bit though. Here is an example of the early stage of a past display fuge on one of my smaller systems back in Chicago:

It was plumbed into this:

Also a very sad day 2 days ago. So I've had this Borb for a few months now and it has been doing great. A couple days ago it basically stopped eating but didn't have a mark on it. Still a perfect looking fish. Yesterday I watched it take its last breath and when I removed it found this:

In an (weak) attempt to see what happened I applied a tiny bit of pressure to the site and blood/fluid seemed to excrete from the anus:

Any thoughts on what happened to this fish? I would have guessed swim bladder but it has been perfectly happy for months. Second guess would be internal parasites, but it ate extremely well and never showed any signs of wasting. The only change in the tank over the last 2 weeks was a rise in Mg to 1900ppm to combat a small patch of bryopsis.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting what comes up when you search "bruised fish". The only thing I could find that looks somewhat similar might be hemorrhagic septicemia. Maybe research that a bit and see if you think it's similar.

I also noticed you said you use Tropic Eden Reeflakes, I assume thats the 3.0 mm one. Anytime I've checked, its always been out of stock from the only retailer I can find it at, and now I see it mentioned here, I see its actually in stock for once.

What modes do you run your gyre and MP10 on and what % do you have them set at?

Intestinal blockage perhaps? I had something similar happen to a Sunburst Anthias of mine but I don't remember seeing any hematoma.

Very interesting. I certainly hope that's not the issue as it looks contagious and has no cure!

Interns blockage is the prevailing theory at this point. I'm going to email LRS and see if they have any thoughts. All the fish are was LRS Fish formula and PE mysis.

So in other news, removed the second Coral+ bulb last week and put the Blue+ back in. There was a direct correlation between the addition of the second Coral+ and algae growth (too much red I would assume). With the extra Coral+ I was cleaning the glass every other day, now I'm back to once a week. Unfortunately the glass wasn't all that suffered and a couple of my rocks have some algae growth going on.

Today I finally took Scrapz' advice and swapped the Blue+ out for an Aquablue Special. I'm pretty happy with the results! Hopefully the new bulb and my new Sea Hare (temporary guest) will take care of the algae for me. After that, not sure what else I can even do with this tank other than watch things grow.

Pic under the new bulb combos:

Tyree Pink Lemonade (didn't like the Coral+):

Judging from how fast it took to kill the fish and the wound on the side. This looks like uronema marinum. Very common in blue/green chromis, anthias, some angelfish species.

Wouldn't that manifest itself on the outside of the fish as well? This fish had no open sores on its body anywhere. It was also perfectly healthy for several months.

No thats not true. Uronema can enter the blood stream of the fish. which make it look like a bruise. Doesn't always look like a open wound. the symptoms matches it. was the fish also listless? hovering in one spot.

Gorgeous tank by the way and those are some sweet pieces.

The fish was very active until a couple days before it died. Then it basically just hung out in its cave until it died. The strange thing about th bruise, and the reason I believe that it was an acute injury to an internal organ is that bruise didn't show up until the moment the fish died (I literally watched it die as morbid as that sounds.

Ted that sounds exactly like UM.once it enters into the blood stream it goes to feed on organs and muscles, they are opportunistic once you see the bruise it's too late.

I watched a few beloved fish died before too. I know that feel.

Well that sucks! So what is the likelihood that the other fish have it as well? The borb was the last fish added.

You should careful with that temporary guest. When mine stuck on the powerhead, a couple of mine nicest acros rtn.
