Social networking vs. forum technology

"Online auctions are nothing but FB crap"...I think MR D Smack just made my point... "With regard to bad false information posting, one need look no further than RC posts to see poor advice and arrogant/condescending trolls."

FB auctions can be of great value and make coral accessible to some that would otherwise not be able to get it. Saying they're crap? Well I'm sorry if you've had a bad experience.

Clearly the SLASH bosses have spoken, I was suggesting there might be a better alternative, obviously I was wrong.

I by far am a boss around here. The reason they are crap is in my opinion " let's see who will give me the most for this coral." Take a very close look at the sale forum here, clearly you have to post a price and not see if you can get more

St. Louis hobbyists don't collectively have all of the nicest coral that one might be interested in. So if you have to look outside the community auctions are an option...and yes, they sell for cheaper than list. Here are some pics I took of coral acquired through auctions, I don't think they're crap, boss.

Well, I hate to see any bad blood so hopefully we can get past our differences. The club is a democracy and the Board of Directors can certainly effect change if that's what our members want. I'm not a Facebook guy, but have followed many of their forums over the years and it's not for me. Granted, I'm over 50, but I'm not alone in thinking our club is about communicating online here on RC, where we've been for 12 years or more. Sure, there are other forums/venues out there, and many have come and gone. We spawned out of Aqualink back in the late 90's.

The thing the FB folk rarely do is hang out with each other, tank tours, helping move an aquarium, helping aquascape, or take down an aquarium. Our club is a social club in more than just a social media aspect. We help each other for fun and for free. We put on frag swaps, we DO interesting things as a club...something sadly lost in today's ME society. IMO, Facebook would only serve to remove our closeness with each other as posts drop off, and folks remain anonymous. Here, I can look at all your posts from Day 1 and have a feel for who you are. It's archaic for sure, but it's what made us who we are.

Until we "merge with the machine" one day, we need to be responsible with technology, and try to remember that we're still human, and we have human needs.

It could be that I'm just been drinking for awhile, but who gives a fart.if you need something that bad, post in both. If you need to sell asap, post in both. Certain people like using certain platforms, use everything to your ability is welcome. Determining which is better is apple to oranges. You do you, and we love you regardless

So I remove your thread about promoting some FB Auction page because you can't get the traffic you want on your SPS sale and your response is to recommend the entire club move to FB?

Seems reasonable....

I think the most logical step is to first build our own website with G0-daddy. After 4-6 years we migrate to My-space. I for one, can't wait to bask in the glorious light of the social network.

Nook, I again appreciate your viewpoint and the philosophy of SLASH. If facebook or social media at large is in contrast to the goals of the club than I concede it is not as good a forum as reef central.
Mhurley-I was very transparent in all my posts that part of the intent was to increase traffic to posts, not just for sales but in general. It was simply a suggestion for a more technologically forward way of communication. I use FB as a platform for multiple utilities including promoting and sharing the work we do at my place of business. It seemed logical that FB would be a preferred way to do that here and I had no idea it would ruffle so many feathers. With regard to my coral sales, those of you that know me know I don't do this for the money. I enjoy the excitement of sharing what I grow with those of like minds for less than I purchase them for. I personally find the auctions fun and have made friends through them. I started posting sales in this forum because I was encouraged by SLASH members to do so.

For all the rhetoric that this is an inclusive club this thread would suggest otherwise. A suggestion of a different platform turned nasty for criticizing the status quo. I am corrected and will not make such suggestions again.

Reef Central has never claimed to be for everyone. It's inevitable that some people will prefer something/someplace else.
It would make me happy if they just stayed there.
We don't exist to increase your sales, or satisfy your need for instant contact notification. We are here for the exchange of information, in hopes that we can help people treat the animals in their care as well as possible, ultimately keeping a healthy, successful tank.
Some people will never get that. I think you should just walk away.
Did I say you? I meant they ;)

I'm fine with the format. Even better with the people here. I have posted stuff before, for sale here, and on the other big one. Not saying the people here are better, but, I got bombarded with offers that were insulting for NIB equipment. Where the people on reefcentral were much more realistic in pricing. As a professional salesmen I can only assume that most were kids based on there begging, extreme low ball offers, and the way they communicate. Some even got mad that I wouldn't respond to $100 offers for brand new MP10's unopened.

Another thing I was thinking of. I here talk of less traffic and use. I bet the post counts are down. Understand that Reefcentral is a huge resource. Almost everything has been covered at one time or another. I cant tell you how many times I google something and RC produces the answer from stored posts. I have been a member for nearly 16 years. (forgot logins to my first account) The other sites might be easier to use and look prettier. But at the end of the day, I trust more info here than anywhere else.

I do agree that at some point RC might need to look into updating its sites/tech. But please do not loose the vast amount of info contained within this site.

My only problem with using RC for SLASH was that it was difficult for me to find. I am new here and haven't really been in the hobby for 10 years so I was unaware the club existed. I did find the SLASH website through some googling, but that appears to be mostly abandoned. I accidentally found the SLASH section of RC while researching other things. I don't know if this is the best way to grow the club. I think there has to at least be a note or link on the the SLASH website to direct people here. The club is much larger and active than I would have guessed from the website

I do agree that with newer, more accessible forms of social media, that forums such as our local clubs forum here on RC are hard to find. It'd be great if we could find ways to drive folks looking for us, to make it easier.
