On a Solana all equipment is hidden minus any powerheads you have in the display area. Everything is hidden behind the false wall.
Id rather have a sump just to have a large fuge, run a better protein skimmer and for the extra water volume.
Dont get a Solana if you are just going to drill it. Not really worth the extra cost.
I'd get a custom Cube made and have it drilled for an overflow. Then you can put a sump on it and you wouldnt have to pay the extra cost for the convenience of an AIO.
My two cents.
Well that depends how much a custom tank costs, the solanas are relatively cheap nowadays and come with low-iron glass.
I might drill my solana since im getting an XL soon.
Yes they can, although i plan to drill it at the bottom not at the side.
also, i wouldn't remove the black chamber, for the least it helps with hiding things you wouldn't want to show.
I did a quick check on Glass Cages site and depending on the size, you can get a plain rimless tank for $100 - $200. Customizing it with low iron glass and holes / overflows would not bring the price up too much. Given that, I can not see it being worth to drill unless you already owned one. The risk seems to high versus the potential benefit. The glass on our tanks just seems to thin.
I am nervous about drilling a 10 gallon I am going to use as a refugium above my DT and am nervous about that. At least with that one if it breaks I am only out lexx than $20.
