Solana tank owner thread.

my sps solana

On a Solana all equipment is hidden minus any powerheads you have in the display area. Everything is hidden behind the false wall.
Id rather have a sump just to have a large fuge, run a better protein skimmer and for the extra water volume.

Dont get a Solana if you are just going to drill it. Not really worth the extra cost.
I'd get a custom Cube made and have it drilled for an overflow. Then you can put a sump on it and you wouldnt have to pay the extra cost for the convenience of an AIO.

My two cents.

Excellent advice here...I agree 100%

Well that depends how much a custom tank costs, the solanas are relatively cheap nowadays and come with low-iron glass.

I might drill my solana since im getting an XL soon.

Can they be drilled? I assumed (because of how thin they are) and have been told its tempered glass.

Yes they can, although i plan to drill it at the bottom not at the side.

also, i wouldn't remove the black chamber, for the least it helps with hiding things you wouldn't want to show.

Can I ask where you got this info? I was told by Current they cannot be drilled. Perhaps they are just being "safe" and won't recommend it. I don't think they ever told me it was tempered, just that they "cannot be drilled properly" or something along those lines.

I'm just curious. Thanks!

I would really like to drill my 34g too, but I am kinda leaning toward a gravity fed fuge so that I don't have to, plus more of the pods would make it into the tank alive instead of pureed, since I am going to turn it into a seahorse tank in the near future.

I did a quick check on Glass Cages site and depending on the size, you can get a plain rimless tank for $100 - $200. Customizing it with low iron glass and holes / overflows would not bring the price up too much. Given that, I can not see it being worth to drill unless you already owned one. The risk seems to high versus the potential benefit. The glass on our tanks just seems to thin.

I am nervous about drilling a 10 gallon I am going to use as a refugium above my DT and am nervous about that. At least with that one if it breaks I am only out lexx than $20.

Why don't you just use an overflow to get the water down into the sump? That's what I'm going to do with my Cardiff.

do a search on Solana Drilled, the first hit youll get on google is a guy who did one, i dont know how to link to other sites without getting blocked :), i guess a fine diamond bit is a must.

ill post once i do it, if it breaks ohh well..

hey you guys, i have a solana tank that i need to get rid soon. If anyone interested you can pm or leave a message in the box. Thanks

I WILL NOT SHIP the tank but if you can make a road trip or live near i will drop the price at 150.00 for the whole tank, 2 ATO bottles, original skimmer brand new. thanks!:fish1:

i already check with glass cages and this is what they quoted me. i can get a solana tank for 250 new with free shipping. also check with another guy on ebay that builds acrylic tanks and he quoted me 250+75 shipping. 325 is not to bad but i prefer glass and since i can get an solana tank for cheaper i would rather go with that. and for the equipments i seen a solana tank where he had 2 phosband reactor hanging on the back which stood higher then the tank which is what im trying to avoid. but most likely i wont be drilling the tank and just leaving it they way it is. ill have to wait and see how the tank is when i get it. im also kinda worried about drilling the tank too as i never drilled a tank before. but if someone could post a link of a drilled tank that would be nice.

blazing ... adds up quickly. I do not consider the overflow stuff part of an equal cost comparison, but even without those costs is still quite a bit more. Good luck drilling. :)
