Some late night Alaska photos

I drove from a small town called Homer to a bigger town called Anchorage this weekend, around 10:00pm or so we stopped to take some pictures, the moon was a little more than half full and it was just really nice looking so we thought I might as well play with the long exposure settings on the camera.

Tripod was a Honda Civic roof ;) Most of these are 30 second exposures, although I think one might have been 20.

Notice the constellation Orion above the mountains...

Here's a shot I just liked, nothing in particular to mention about it though. The foreground is really well lit up but that is just because there is a light way far away and over 30 seconds the sensor really picked up a lot of light.

And then this is my first ever shot of car lights, was kind of cool ;)

I got some pretty good eagle pictures over the weekend in Homer, I'll post some in the next couple days.

Nicely done Recty.

First two images were ISO 800, but the first was F8 whereas the second was F2.8. I've never taken night shots so I wanted to experiment a little, I didnt know really what I was doing.

The third was F8 also but ISO 320, having never taken a picture at night with moving lights in it, I didnt know how much light sensitivity I should use to not totally overexpose the shot.

I'll post some eagle pictures soon ;)

Thanks guys, they were actually pretty fun to take, not as boring as I would have thought standing around for 30 seconds would be ;)

My brother and my wife were in the car and as soon as I had the shot ready, we turned the car off and I told them not to talk, move or barely breath so the "tripod" stayed steady. Then I stood outside in the -20 below with wind chill and waited for the shot to complete!

Sound fun? It actually was for some reason, heh.

Sweet shots Recty... What type of camera are you shooting with?
A canon 50D with the f2.8 24-70 lens.

I sure wish I had something wider to shoot with, 24mm ends up being 38mm on my crop body. If I had a true 24mm shot it would have been able to shot a lot more of the mountains around there.

::sigh:: Even though I believe you have the single best all around lens you can buy for a Canon, there are always other lenses to be desired for shots that don't fit into the "all around" category.

Yeah, I'm happy with the 24-70 too, I want to buy something wide angle for landscape shots though.

It is fun! I like being out there in the cold, makes me feel in touch with nature. You realize the scale of things, especially at -20F! People think I am nuts, but at least you get it. We are delicate creatures even though we seem to forget that sometimes. MAkes me admire these animals even more for surviving even a few nights, but then an entire season! REI's got pleanty of my money and I still couldn't compete with what mother nature gave these critters.

Alaska sure has some good nighttime shooting opportunities. Between the low light polution and the Aurora...what more could you ask for? Well, maybe the temperature to stay above zero for a while :)

Ah, but when the temperature drops below zero, it usually means clear skies so it's a blessing in disguise ;)

It was kind of weird, it was my first photography experience out in the elements and I thought it would probably be my last, and when I was getting out of the car I was like what the heck am I doing? But when it was all said and done, it was refreshing and fun and I'm glad I did it :)

You'll enjoy it. Next time if the club meeting is in a more hospitable place than 45 miles away, bring your camera and I'll show you some things.

Not that I've seen yet, I just keep checking alaskafragswap from time to time. I like to post pictures there too ;)
