a question on lugols. How many drops on approx. 50 gals volume, and how frequent.

I would start with about 1 drop daily. Right now I'm running about 165g of actual water volume and Chris Brightwell reccomended that I dose 3 drops daily to keep the levels constant. I've been dosing this way now for 11 days and have seen no adverse effects, but have noticed better blues out of my millepora and a few of my acros.

That seems like a lot. I know on the Kent's Lugols it says to only dose 1 drop per 25 gallons each week. I wonder if the Brightwell product is more diluted.

Sonny, I've been meaning to ask you...

I'm going to have a rimless 48x24 made for me as well... but i was looking at doing it 17" tall so it could be made out of thinner glass and be a bit cheaper... do you think your tank would look goofy 3" shorter? Do you think the 20" height is a really good number? Mine will be lit by a 6x54 watt ATI, so i'll have one less bulb then you which is why i was maybe thinking the 17" height would work better. What do you think though?
Thanks

The light fixture will be fine and the tank should look good at that height. What thickness of glass will they be using for the tank your are looking into?

Yeah, Kent's Lugols is one drop per 25gl weekly so I dont see how Brightwells could be different. I thought All Lugols Solution was the same makeup and consistency but I could be wrong.

The Brightwells instruction do say "Add this product at the maximum dosage of 1 drop (1/20th ml) per 35 US-gallons daily to maintain a concentration of 0.05 ppm" so it must be diluted. The instructions on Brightwells stuff is always misleading. I hate when they say "Maximum" as it really throws off my initial dosing. When starting up the AA's I dosed 20% of the "Maximum" daily dose and the next day my sand was brown. :p

Historically, Kent has always been more a bit more "cautious" with such "instructions" due to fear of legal issues if something goes wrong and they get blamed. It could have something to do with it.

You are probably right. Kent is doing good by the hobbyist as I would rather add just enough than too much of these chemicals.

it will be 3/8's all around... if i went up to 20"in height he said (local tank maker does great work) it would have to be 1/2 front and back at the very least.. so 3/8 reduces my cost a good amount, especially for starfire.

I have 18 inch height on my tank and love it. I think 17 inch height would be nice also. It really makes the tank appear visually deeper. Also I love the fact all my corals on the sand bed get strong lighting. Helps me keep more clams and sps at the sand bed. Plus its also easier to aquascape!

I probably missed this, but how did you determine the amount of drops per gallon of MB7?

I follow the instructions on the bottle and sometimes dose a little extra. If you are just starting out and have brown corals and alage than go with the medium to high nutrient dosing. Once you tank cleans up switch to the low nutrient dosing:

" Medium- to High-nutrient Systems, or to seed Biological Filtration in new aquaria: To effectively decrease the concentration of available nutrients and waste material in all marine and freshwater aquaria, add 5 ml (1 capful) per 25 US-gallons (94.6 L) [˜4 drops per gallon (3.8 L)] of aquarium water daily for the first two weeks of use; the impact that MicroBacter7 has on an aquarium is most evident within this period. Turn protein skimming and UV-sterilization off for a period of 4 hours following addition to aquaria. A noticeable difference in water clarity is typically apparent within 30-minutes of dosing. Follow same instructions for new aquarium start-up. Thereafter, switch to “low-nutrient” dosage (below).

Stable, Low-nutrient Systems: To maintain a low concentration of available nutrients in all marine and freshwater aquaria, 5 ml (1 capful) of MicroBacter7 per 50 US-gallons (189.3 L) [˜2 drops per gallon (3.8 L)] of aquarium water no more than once each week; alternately, add 1 drop per 50 US-gallons daily (or 1 drop per 25 US-gallons every other day). Turn protein skimming and UV-sterilization off for a period of 4 hours following addition to aquaria. Dosage may be adjusted according to perceived benefit to aquarium, however it is recommended that the dosage not exceed 1 drop per 10 US-gallons per day. With time, hobbyists may determine that decreasing the dosage and/or dosing frequency by up to 50% sufficiently maintains a low-nutrient environment. During changes in biological filtration or when increasing the aquarium bioload, dose 1 drop per 25 US-gallons daily for one week, then resume “low-nutrient” dosage. "

Sunny, does MB7 dose live bacteria or does it dose food to feed the bacteria?

MB7 is the actual bacteria. The Carbon source(Vodka) feeds the bacteria and helps in multiply.

Come Tuesday it'll be the second week for me dosing MB7 to the tank. As of now, I want to say it did nothing to rid the GHA in my tank. Is it not going to do anything until the vodka is dosed?

Tomorrow will be my first week finished. I didnt have any real problems, but it cleared up some red slime stuff on the second day. I didnt change anything else in the tank.

Maybe your tank is just taking its sweet time. The bacteria has to take hold.

Hi Sonny,
I was asking for your help on the vodka thread that was moved to the Reef Chemistry Forum. Is all right for me to continue asking for help in this thread?

If so here is a question for you,I have been dosingMB7 for about 1 week now and vodka for 8 weeks, I have stopped the vodka do to filliment greenish brown algae started growing every were. I am still dosing MB7 @20 ml for my 100 gallon water volume system, I will continue this for the 2 weeks. My question is when should I start dosing vodka again and is the algae I am seeing the kind they describe in the reefkeeping article related to the vodka?

Also do you turn off your skimmer while dosing MB7 for 4 hours as directed on the bottle?

I have lowered my CA and KH to 8 and 420 as you said I should.
I will still try to post pics for you of the affected corals.
Is all right to post them here?

Thanks Again Sonny for your help!:D

Hi Sonny,

Do you think that a six bulb T5 fixture will work on a 28 inch wide tank. I see you have seven bulbs on 24 inch. My new tank is 5' long as well so thinking of using only 54 watt bulbs. Any thoughts?
I am also looking at the Aquatinics like yours. Seems reasonable in cost compared to ATI. Thanks!

I’m not trying to speak for Sunny, well I guess through the quotes I am. I’m just trying to fill in while I am bored at work.

I say two weeks so that the good bacteria has a chance to settle in before bad bacteria can take over. You dont want to feed bad bacteria such as Red Cyano.

LEAVE YOUR SKIMMER ON. Mojo~ just had many fish die because the skimmer was not on and the O2 was depleted. The older bottle say turn the skimmer off but on the new bottles it is no longer there. I leave my skimmer on at all times and only turn it off when dosing AA's for about an hour.

I did stay at a Holiday Inn a couple of years ago.

lmao that s funny. Just wanted to ad I now have a clown and a flame angel. Added it today. still dosing MB7. Running skimmer.

Best of luck with them. Hopefully last time was a fluke.

I just lost my 2 yo clown the other day. He was my first official fish. It was my fault. Left the canopy off and he went surfing.

I'm sure this was mentioned somewhere in your thread Sunny, but what brand of salt are you using right now and how often are you doing water changes?
