SPS Placement Question

KMP

Wag More; Bark Less
Picked up the following 'GREAT' SPS frags from schrun209 and sulcata1619:

- ORA Green Birds Nest
- ORA Rose Mili
- Green Slimer
- Karls Candlelight Acro
- LE Pink Prostrata
- Tubs Purple Polyp Birdnest
- Super Hairy Green Milli
- Yellow Suharsonai (piece that broke off Kevin's - bonus points :)

I was hoping to get recommendations on where to place these in my tank to ensure they get adequate lighting given what I have which is a 250w MH (direct center), Phoenix 14k bulb, and 2 96w VHO actinics.

Below is a picture; the pillar on the left is where they will all reside. As you can see I can get some on the top, some on the first ledge, and some on the second ledge of the rock work. Following are the depths below water surface:

- Top of rocks (4")
- First ledge (8.5")
- Second ledge (14.5")

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Glue them on rubble rock, if you don't like the placement, they don't like it, pop them up and move as needed.

SPS are kinda like sparkplugs, they need to be read and tuned accordingly.

I am always moving mine, I have my Tyree Purple Unknown, Palletta blue tip, Shawn Bennett Yellow Tort, and Tyree Ultimate Blue, and and two new ones waiting for a little placement myself.

Having seen your tank, I think you'll have enough light at any level, but I'd be sure they get plenty flow. Are your whirlys turning the tunzes?

None of those corals are "light demanding" corals so anywhere would be fine. Like doug said, until you get the hand of what corals do better in different spots, I'd recomment rubble and then attach the rubble.

YELLOW SUHARSONAI?

YELLOW SUHARSONAI?

CAN YOU POST A PICT OF THIS,I RECIEVED A FRAG FROM THE SWAP AND IT MIGHT BE THAT CORAL,ANY HELP APPRECIATED,MIKID

brian, light is about 5" above the water.

kevin, tunze's arent' rotating, but they are crashing dead center of the tank. lots of flow.

feel pretty good about putting them anywhere; however, was wanting to stick them to the rocks so they would not get knocked over while i'm not around. they are on plugs now.

mikid, here's a link with a picture. what i got was two little bitty piecies that broke off of kevin's frag. so i stuck them to a plug and stuck them in the water:

Hey Kenny, your tank looks awesome. I really like the aquascaping, makes me want to redo my rock work. Hope all the frags are doing well.

thanks sam. it's coming along. lots of nice zoas and now sps. just need it all to grow out :)

The best thing about the rubble rock is that it appears the smaller surface inhibits the "puddling" a bit more, and they shoot up one they get to the edges I find. Because they don't like to grown down and in less direct lighting, it takes time for them to encrust off the rocks. This gives you time to find the best placement for looks, color arrangment, and light needs.

By the time that happens, you and the piece have figured each other out and then its on the rocks for good. Some of mine have been growing over a year now and just have commited to where they are going to stay.

Gives one options, and I am all about options.
