SPS Shallow Reef Tank Build Thread

Ah shallow cubes. Once you go that route you never want to go back to regular tanks. Love the circular mass flow effect you can create for the corals. 36"x36"x11.5" here with a 400w halide.

Hey guys,

Yeah...just a few updates...some good ...some bad..

Good:

-I am the proud owner of a Bubble King 200 Mini :D

-Re-did all the bottom plumbing and did some changes to the sump. I used stainless steal mesh to line the inside of the stand...looks SICK!

-I ditched ALL the sand and decided to go bare bottom. So now the tank looks incredibly crisp with its StarBoard bottom ;)

Bad:

-ALL the fish committed suicide. The overflow box didn't have a cover (It does now...it has a black crate cover)..so they went through and landed on some filter media..and died. Includes the two B&W ocellaris..a naked clown and two female square back anthias... ALL...gone..

-I lost 2 yellow milli frags :(

-Some of the coral lost their original colors. I need to check my parameters and go from there..I have just been VERY busy lately.

But over all everything is good. I still gotta install my Korallin 1502 reactor..

The current residents are a coral banded shrimp and a pair of harlequin shrimp.. :)

Thanks!

Yeah, it sucked..all of them in the same fashion.. Now the overflow box is covered...too late though..lol

As far as fish go.. Im gonna wait for a while.. Im still trying to get my coral set first.. I just gonna go with a pair of clowns.

You got rid of your sand and I added sand(crushed coral, actually). Why did you get rid of your sand? I added mine for more surface area for bacteria to grow on(Zeovit)

GADGETS:

Well, aside from a pair of Rods Onyx.. I really dont know. Having a reef limits your choices.. :(

ZooZ,

Thanks brotha.. It sucked..but hey, c'est la vie..

RUTZ,

Well, the tank being so shallow, there were constant sand storms..

Sand on the rocks..coral..everywhere. The nano streams are quite powerful little suckers (6045,6055).. Plus i like the clean and crisp look of a white bottom.

I hear ya, the 6055's are very strong, I have 2 Modded along with my Mag9 Return(80%). But, the crushed coral actually stays put. Also, BB, just gets covered in corraline after time and dulls the colors of the corals, where as the white bottom contrasts nicely, IMO.

True.. 6055's are some strong suckas... i have a modded 6055 and a modded 6045.. thinking about grabbing a 6025 just for added flow.

I also have my snapper open about 1/2 way.. which adds more flow so.. there was sand EVERYWHERE!

I always keep my coralline in check. I hate is so i make sure i razor it off the glass...but might be a bit tougher scraping it off the starboard.
