SPS Shallow Reef Tank Build Thread

with respect to the PPFD of light bulbs and all I think there is MUCH more we dont know and still have yet to learn with respect to growth rates, colour etc. Hey Clownreef is that skimmer the 9002? For 3 days and only 3 pieces of rock thats pretty awesome!

Great build.
Do you not have some type of standpipe in the overflow? It has to be super loud with the water just flowing over the edge of the overflow.

ZOOZ,

Its the 9005..and it works REAAAALLY good.. Probably the best skimmer i ever had..

FISHYBIZ,

I have filter media in there to break the water as it falls. Its actually a very quiet system. The only noise is made by the pump..which, sequence pumps are VERY quiet.

I'm not sure what he's using, but, I have an almost identical tank. First I used nothing; and yes, it was extremely loud! Then, I originally had mine setup with a durso, but, it restricted the flow WAY too much. I ended up using the standpipe of my old LifeReef Overflow. It works perfectly, I can run almost almost full bore on a Mag 9.5 with it keeping up. Which is a very good turnover rate on a tank this size(about 800 gph-estimate).

Im hoping HOBOGATO will build a Ca. reactor suitable for my system, its roughly 100 gal. including the sump. So nothing too big..

only if you promise to be more careful with it than you were the sump

UPDATE:

Well, i browsed around and came across these fans..so i went ahead and purchased one and they work REALLY good. They are quiet and keep my light cool. They sell an 8 fan version but i bought the 4 fan unit. Here are a few pics..:D

And the first inhabitants.. 3 turbo snails.. got them last night..lol.. and non of them died. Ive been a fan of Bio Spira since it came out and I've used it on all my tanks to jump start them.. so, day one is in the books for these guys..LOL

Why just 3 snails? Is it because there is really not much for them the eat? or is there another reason.
By the way I love the set up

No reason..it was more of a "do or die" thing. I knew snails are VERY sensitive to bad water quality so i wanted to see if they would make it in my new system after adding Bio Spira..and just like i thought.. the system is pretty safe. Ive used Bio Spira in the past with fantastic results..:D

UPDATE:

Well, the tank is in excellent condition. The snails are still chuggin' and happy as can be.. Although mexican turbos do poop like there is no tomorrow and the sand bed looks a liiiittle bit..over poop-ulated..

Im thinking about doing a big water change on wednesday.. Im guessing the snails and their poop is helping the tank.. So far so good! :D

totally agree, mexican turbos poo too much but is helping your tank cycle. how big is a big water change?

Thanks for keeping my thread alive Zooz :P

Not too much..its only a 30 gal. water change... there is like 4 lbs. of turbo snail crap there..LOL.. they seem happy though..

for sale at $50.00 a pound!

Post your water parameters. Let us know about temperature swings, salinity readings day to day, and how much water evaporates.

I have a feeling livestock will soon be added and we're gonna need a bunch more pictures.

UPDATE:

Well..i did a 30 gal. water change today..

Salinity: 1.025
Ammonia- 0
Nitrate-0
Nitrite-0
Ph-8.2
Temp- 77-78

:D:D:D

The snails are chillin'..although they are kinda lazy.. they don't get all of the film algae..and that ****es me off!..LOL..eat little monkeys eat!!

I added a canister filter full of carbon.

I'm adding tomorrow a sand sifting star.. and after that, getting rid of the turbos and adding nassarius and astrea snails..

My first addition will be my 2 regal tangs..I know, i know..tang police.. i will give them up when they get too big for my tank. Although the size is perfect i would say. Lots of open room to swim and if i was a tang, id like to live in my tank :D
