Stichodactyla gigantea, Brown gigant carpet anemone

I have the fan on a timer, but not the lights. I have just been spacing out on buying a new one. I go get some later today.
Arms=Tentacles I couldn't even get close enough for spell check to get it for me so I just went with arms, sorry spelling is not a strong point of mine.
I do not dose any two part supplement, My mag, Alk, and Cal seem fine on my test kits? I only very recently have tried to add any stony coral. I did add a Glalxia LPS and may soon add a open brain LPS.
I did buy a large thing of carbon and am running some in the sump.
Thanks for the help.

cold tank.

cold tank.

Hey Cope just wanted to know how cold is your water getting at night? Do you have a heater set up? I had that same problem 2 years back when i had my first anenome i had the tank set up near a patio door and at night the tank was just getting to cold and it would shrink at night but as soon as i turned on my lights and they were on for a while it would open up.

very nice.
You're not out of the woods just yet, though- your anemone is still acclimating.
Compare the length of your anemones tentacles with those of the other gigantea pictured in this thread. Healthy gigantea should look like a shag carpet.

Yeah, I still got my fingers crossed. I did feed it a small piece of fresh shrimp the other day and it kept it down. I hope to have a shot like that in the future. Thanks again for all your help. I'll keep everyone posted on how it's doing.

Cope! I just realized this thread is here. Doi.

I'm glad you are trying so hard and looks like you should be successful. I hope that I can be successful too.

Thanks for your support in my thread.

Lights out shot, Showing the lengthening of the tentacles.
Strange that it only dose this at night?

Not quite a shag carpet, but looking better
10 to 15 percent survival rate, is this accurate? Man if it is that low I feel bad foe even buying this thing. Maby these are something not meant for or tanks?
Thanks for looking, and all the help.

It is slightly bleached, it will take time to reacclimate to lighting. Stay the course.

Agree with traveller7. Stay the course, the fact you've made it two weeks already puts you in a small minority.

Unfortunately, the statistics are probably pretty accurate. As to whether they belong in our tanks at all.. is a question of debate. Some would say definitely not. I have 2 in my tank so I'd be a hypocrite to suggest that myself, but I would go so far as to suggest it's a carefully measured choice to try one.

Once they have succesfully made the transition into captivity they tend to be rather spectacular and hardy reef inhabitants. It's just getting to that point which is the real question.

Some more picks. I'm not sure if it's just a coincidence or not, but the tentacle extension seems to be related to flow? I noticed the one spot that was getting the most flow had the longest tentacles. Now I added a little more direct flow, and the tentacles seem to be elongating.
Thoughts?

This is showing the mouth, I think the flow has something to do with the mouth being tightly closed. This is the tightest I have seen it. This is also the most flow the anemone has seen yet,

And this morning

The cyano behind the anemone just wont go away? I guess it's a low flow area?

It is looking good. Increased water flow should eliminate the cyano. Also, what are your phosphates and nitrates? What kind of skimmer are you using? You're running carbon I believe you mentioned earlier, right? You might want to run something to remove phosphate, polyfilter is one, but there are others specifically for phosphates.

Nitrate and po4 undetectable. I know that I have po4 in the watter I think due to my cheato it don't show up on tests? HOB skimmer, I know I know. I have a very large skimmer in the bay, but it wont fit in my sump. I have been toying with the idea of a separate cabinet to house a large sump and my skimmer. ( the skimmer I have in storage is massive, I got it from a LFS that my friends own, when they up graded)I have thought about using a phosphate remover, but in one of the threads they said it may adversely affect an anemone? Running carbon 24-7, Changing out on a weekly basis.

I cant find the thread on nophos and anemones? If you think it's a good idea then I'll pick some up. It would help my LPS any way.

If it's undetectable and you have chaeto, I wouldn't worry about it. Some HOB skimmers are good, some aren't, it depends. I would say up the flow to get rid of the cyano, not that it is a major worry, just looks unattractive and suggests high nutrients and low water flow.

I would concern yourself with the anemone and not the cyanobacteria at this point. IME anemones do fine with (low level)detectable nitrates and phosphates. Cyano isn't going to hurt the anemone, either.
It looks better in those last pix. It would be great if this has a happy ending!
