Reef Bass

It's very quiet in here. Time to make some noise.

How are everyone's tanks? Anyone engaged in any particular tasks?

Over last weekend I did a large water change (like 50gs of my 150g system), scraped lots of algae, replaced gfo media, mixed ca supplement, relocated Pearlberry, Oregon tort and other fun things.

Grant was very kind and helped me nuke a ton of aiptasia. Thanks again Grant.

And after everything settled back down, I snapped off over a hundred pics. Good times. Now to postprocess them...

Sounds like you had a lot of fun time there :D every reefer has to go through the aptasia or shrooms event sooner or latter.

Yeah this site has been DEAD, I want to post sometime but most people just read and don't say anything so I loose interest of posting anything else. Come on people ... contribute.

Btw, do you think it's a good idea to have a sticky of "local resources" ? so people know where to find things locally? some come to mind such as: dow flake, plumbing supplies, pleaxi glass, lace rocks, CO2 refil places, ocean salt water at UC davis lab, ect...... just a though.

Hey guys,

Hey Grant why help Ken with aptasia when I have 2 that need help!!:spin1:

I finally couldnt't stand the algae battle anymore and removed the foam Background in my one tank. All sorts of algae would stick to it and I spent all my time trying to get rid of it. Sooooo I pulled it out added a rock from my reef tank and we will see how it goes. I think it just created a dead space where all the detritus collected. Time will tell.

My reef tank has been OK i guess with not much more damage from those nudis but I haven't looked to close lately.

My pond is doing well after a small pipe break where 2700 gallons leaked out and my fish were left in a 100 gallon puddle. Don't tell Ken but 5 8-10" bass found their way in somehow as did 4 medium sized Bluegill.
They all like to harass my feeder fish and are friendly with each other. I am amazed at how they hang out and hunt together. I just need to teach them how to eat other food as the feeders will cost a lot after a while. They kind of like worms so that will help for now. No egrets or herons yet but a group of raccoons paid a visit. Not to much damage though. I need a few more big rocks and a load or four of decomposed granite and then I am done. Oops forgot to mention the bridge Grant is going to help me build. I just need to decide what type.

Hope everyone is doing well and I love the sticky supplies idea. I alway forget a store or two.

Hey all, nice to see some posts. I had to see Ken's tanks all cleaned up and happy and it didn't dissapoint. His corals look fantastic and in rearranging his aquascape he has gotten it to look much more natural. He has a section of Torts in the center that are to die for( love the smooth skinned corals) plus enough LE corals just lying on the sand to fill another tank. Of course his pink milli is as big and happy as ever and in general his sps tank looks great. There were actually still 3 or 4 corals that I will be lining up for at a later date. Having said all this I had to lend a hand on the lps tank, especially since I had the aptasia X and Ken was out plus I have to protect my investment as each time I see him I end up with a new gem for my tank. This time was no differant as I left with half of his colony of purple death palys TY Ken. All in all a good visit.
Craig let me know if you need help on your tank . If I'm able I am always willing to help out a fellow reefer. Give me a call when you want to work on the bridge and I still like the idea of a scaled down Railroad tressell, but will build the std japanese arch type if you want. LOL

Hey Ken we need more pics and we all should start posting some pics also .I will even learn how if you can come over and show me (the village idiot with computers) how to take and post them at my house and on my computer.

Tom, I like your local resource sticky thread idea. I'll contact the mods and see if / how we can make that happen.

Craig, sorry to hear about your background. You did a good job with that. Do you think the rate of algae accumulation was about average or was some sort of algae fueling substance perhaps leaching from the background?

And I've heard of largemouth spontaneously appearing in people's ponds. It's a neat phenomenon that is not well understood. :spin1:

Grant, thanks for your kind words (and aiptasia nuking assistance). And you're right that we should all be posting more pics. I'd be happy to facilitate your photo taking and posting. Maybe we should start a thread of members' full tank shots, and / or a thread with club members' favorite corals?

Ken, I love the member full tank shot idea. Maybe we should make that a sticky too and only allow the pictures taken by you? :D :D hint hint ..... tank tour photo shoot :D

I second Tom's photo shoot Idea with Ken as the photographer. We could call it the First Annual photo shoot and Tank Crawl"

With a couple of meetings canceled this summer and not being able to make last month's meeting, I feel like a hit and run member. 2 hit meeting member to be exact.

Been busy with work and traveling. In addition, I was studying for a couple of licensing exams I had to take for work. Had some relatives in town. Felt like I quit the hobby for a couple of months. I did get to go small LFS in Irvine/Costa Mesa that had $1, $2, $5, $10, and up to $50 frags. The $1 and $2 was a shocker... they fragged 2-3 polyps of the most common green zoas. Also visited Vivid Aquariums in LA. Its about 20 minutes away from where I grew up. Pretty nice set up, and nice frags. Another thing, I have not gotten my fishing license this year, let alone pick up my fly rod or tied a fly. Hopefully I can make it up north before the season ends and catch the last part of the October Caddis Hatch. If not Putah Creek, during Thanksgiving.

My lil nano has been on autopilot with water changes. Added another LED spotlight to the tank. My tank is overrun with grape macro and halimeda macro hitchhiker. Looks like a fuge. Zoas are growing fast. SPS ok. Garf Bonsai decided to grow a base rather than tips.

Thinking of building a stand or buy a quality used stand to hold a 40 breeder to upgrade, but use it the meantime with my current nano and maybe a small 10 gallon. Also will eventually try to take a shot in building a led fixture. As for purchases, I finally bought a ro/di unit. No coral purchases. Boo.

Happy Halloween.

Hope I can make the next meeting

Best,
Mike
