Sweet, sweet sand, how did I ever live without you.(VIDEO INSIDE)

At the end of the day both sides have many examples of great tanks.
Sunny, I'm glad you're happy and your tank is doing well.

I'm well aware that my two biggest inspirations for sps aquaria run a SSB + DSB, even though I don't. For some reason, I thought good husbandry, balanced import/export, and devoted care for the tank were more important ;)

Perhaps people are just giving you heat to get you to post some still-pics too.

Every time is Sand bed or BB thread you going to have a opposition you like it or not .
Everyone thinks there way is better.
Sorry I misguided your thread .
I get my pictures out of your thread.
And i will unsubscribe from this thread.

I dont want anyone to stop posting, I just didnt want the thread to get into another BB vs DSB thread. Those types of threads bring out the worst in people and are usually pointless.

Zoom, you have a great tank and I always enjoy a little eye candy. ;)
Your tank was one of the main reasons why I purchased a Deltec skimmer.
I hope I cleared things up with everyone.

Now, everyone get back to posting. :hammer:

I will be sure to post some still pics tonight.
I have many, many pics pre-sand if anyone would like to see them.

Is the color of your tank about the same in person as it is in the video?

Thanks

Color in person is a hint whiter and bluer, and maybe 25% brighter.

I am very happy with the new lighting setup.
I had a couple bad XM bulbs, that is why I initially didn't like it, but after replacing the bulbs I am very happy with it.

Sunny, yours is still one of my favorite aquascaped tanks. I'm setting up a 48x32 and from the start I had your aquascaping in mind, kind of a big "L". Its fantastic. I'm actually putting all my LR on starboard, with sand in the front of the "L". I love your sig.

Zoom, you tank looks fantastic - sand or no sand.

Thanks for the great comments.

I also have my rocks resting on starboard, so the sand is only in the front portion of the tank. There is only 25-30lbs of sand in my tank, so it is very easy to remove the sand when ever I feel the need too.

So I can siphon the sand out every 2 months and replace it and never run into any issues.

That is why I am so confident about my sand. :D

As promised here are some pics I took today.
The new sand seems to be causing a "glowing" effect with my camera, so the pictures are not all that great or clear.

OK that really sucks. I've been planning on the same thing, rocks on starboard and sand in the front - replacing the sand such as Tanu, Weast and the Feb TOTM. I can't believe someone beat me to the execution of it. Now I look like a copycat. ;-) Also seemed like a great idea cuz no sandstorm when you NEED to remove your rocks for whatever reason.

I'm sure I missed it but exactly what sand are you using?

Im sure nobody will call you a copycat;) .

Its basically a hybrid of BB and SSB systems.

I am using Caribsea Seafloor Special Grade Reef Sand.

stunning tank! i hope to have one as nice someday.

I wander if going w/ sand post bare-bottom will be a little easier in the long run than having sand from the beginning considering the rocks had plenty of time to get nice and clean?

How are you keeping detritus from building on the starboard? I was planning on use a Wavysea with a powerhead on the bottom back of the tank, sweeping 180 pushing junk out onto the sand. I don't want any buildup back there.

Some people may say it will be a nutrient sink

Sunny, what I have found with sand beds is that they need to be stirred from time to time to keep them from becoming "nutrient sinks". Many with SPS tanks do not like to do this because of the subsequent "sand storm" in their tanks but there is no other way to get it out of the sand bed and into the skimmer.

I like to call it a storm cycle and I do it to my tank every 3 months. How can you have a sand bed crash if you do not allow the crud to get to toxic levels.

My tank stays pretty clean and I have very little detritus in the display. That may be due to the use of filter socks 24/7. The sump builds up detritus which I never siphon out. Once a week I turn off the main pump, stir up the sump and turn the pump back on.
Within seconds SPS extend their feeding tentacles, its worked great for me so far.

I have been looking at the Wazy Sea unit also, I may have to get a couple as soon as I hear enough feedback.

Do the Tangs fight much?

Again Saweeet tank.

Never witnessed any of the tangs fighting.

I guess I was lucky.

Great tank...who cares about bb vs sb anymore

Great tank...who cares about bb vs sb anymore

Awesome tank! Okay, why does everyone care about the bb vs sb debate? Sunny has an awesome tank...nuff said. He likes sand...you don't...who cares? Can I see a show of hands for the amount of people that got into this hobby to talk about how low their nutrients are? :) I assume that like me everyone that ever got a tank got one because of the awesome beauty of a coral reef. Why don't we all just shut up about the pros and cons of sb and bb. Each has its good qualities and each has its bad. Anyone unwilling to admit this about their own method needs to open their eyes a little bit. Now can't we all just sit back and marvel at Sunny's tank for a few seconds.
