Syracuse/Rosamond Gifford Zoo

Well, after about 2 years of letters, emails, and phone calls. We were finally allowed to get in and help revamp the 180 gallon reef tank display at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. I have to say that we helped the normal staff do it, because it's a government funded entity. If we're doing it for free, the county won't be paying people to do it for very long. So, we did/directed the revamp and now it's their baby.

The old reef was a pitiful sight. Wall of base rock, lots of exposed PVC, little flow, 2 trachy brains, one small leather, a HUGE 24x24in brown monti crap, and a 4 inch, 10 year old sand bed. Other livestock included a huge damsel, coral banded shrimp, and a reclusive hippo tang.

We removed all of the livestock, rock, and the sand bed. On cleaning the tank we discovered that the front seams had NO silicone. It had virtually worn away. After some debate, and learning that it's center brace had also long since been broken....we went back to ABC Reefs and grabbed a new 180. It took some doing, but now they have a brand spanking new 180 with glass-holes overflow and lock line returns, vs over hanging PVC everywhere.

Tim also got vendors to donate a brand new Vortech, and a Bermuda skimmer is on the way. We re-scaped it with cured Marco Rocks and new sand. Fish are in a temp holding area, corals are back in. I don't have pictures as we didn't anticipate it being this involved.

The zookeepers were extremely appreciative of their new toy and should no doubt, with a little tutelage, have a very nice reef tank.

They have almost NO BUDGET for new livestock. I know ABC will be helping, I have some corals to donate as well. If you have anything (corals) you'd like to donate, please let me know, or get in touch with Tim at ABC. They're off to a great new start. With a little help from local hobbiests, we can make this tank shine.

Being at the zoo for almost 8 hours, I can attest to the Ooohs and Ahhs the other SW tank got. It only has 2 clowns in it and kids just go nuts for it.

Very generous and agree on the much needed revamp.
I had no idea you were putting this thing together ,I dont ever remember hearing anyone at ABC make mention or any post from you in this forum.I called Tim on his cell Fri. evening about a special order Im putting together, following up today with an email.

Is their anything in particular they might be looking for or need?I would be willing to donate where I can and thought I'd make a note in the e~mail to Tim if its something I have.

Very generous of you guys Cully. Many thanks from my girls and I.

I saw that tank last year and it definitely did need an upgrade! Maybe......just a thought.......ABC could donate some stuff in exchange for a small sticker or something from the shop as a little recognition? I don't know if that's allowed in a funded place like that, but it'd be nice if people were inspired by the new display, they'd have somewhere local to go to start up their own tanks. Anyways, I'll make sure to gawk at the tank for a few hours next time I'm at the zoo. Great thing you did cully!

lets just say the 180 wasn't free, but it was a lot cheaper than cost. I believe there'll be some recognition for ABC.

This project was to take place almost 2 years ago. I had Euro-Reef donate 2 skimmers, but the zoo never followed up. There were various emails and phone calls that were exchanged. After a while, it became us begging them to help them and it just fizzled out.

Fast forward a couple of years and someone retired, opening the lines of communication and renewing enthusiasm. They persued us/ABC fairly aggressively. We narrowed it down and the events took place. Dave aka iamwrasseman here on RC also did the new tank's plumbing, so props to Digidy Dave for joining us.

Anyway, that's why the renewed thread (Graves, last one was a couple years ago). Getting fish in there has an involved QT process, but corals, after inspection by us, can go right in. Hate to give em redbugs or flatworms or something like that.

ABC has been VERY generous, did I mention they got a Vortech donated!!! New tank!!! Drilled and plumbed!!!! Reports of a T5 fixture is also in the works as well as discounted supplies. Plus I'm sure there'll be an occasional coral donation. But, ABC IS a business and for us to keep them going strong they need the revenue. The zoo however relies heavily on donations. So, snap off a head of frogspawn, or a branch of digi. They'd be so appreciative to have ANY livestock. It's better than the 3 count'em 3 corals they have now.

Neoz, I'm sure they'd be happy to have the Naso, but it'd be in QT for a few months.

That is awesome Cully, we were up there at the zoo earlier this year and the tank was defiantly lacking. We'll have to make the trip up in a few months to see the progress.

When we started the tank down here in Binghamton we did a sat when a few of us stayed down there to answer questions and to have a naming for the largest fish in the tank. This was just a few hours and it really brought alot of attention to the tank as well as the kids were going nutz. Once's its done call the local news that also did alot for bring new people to the zoo and making our tank a great new asset which in turn frees up more monies for the tank in there budget. With the lighting talk with Ice cap they donated a lot to our zoo project.

Capt how do I go about making that happen? He's a beautiful very healthy, fat Naso Tang. I'm only looking to give him a good home because I want to get a Blond Naso which this one was supposed to be. I purchased him from ABC in November. He was just a little little guy then ;) . I would love to donate him to the Zoo.

Who has the QT Tank? Is it at the Zoo? I can get him to ABC reefs so maybe Tim or you could handle the transport from there? Let me know...

I have 3 single heads of Green w/purple tips Hammer coral. 2 of then are just starting to split into 2 heads. I have LOTS of Green Paly's and some Pink Paly's I could donate. I also have 2 seperate rocks with Green Hairy Mushrooms, probably about 4 or 5 on each rock. Also have a 3-4" rock of GSP which has a couple of Snake Polyps on it. Let me know what I need to do to get these things to the zoo. I'm breaking down my tank shortly and I want to get these things out soon. Ohhhhhhhhh also have a smaller chunk of a bubblegum chalice that's in a state of regrowth (small part that died off but is not affecting the rest of the coral)

Jim save some for yourself!

Tim is going to talk to the new person in charge of the display to set up a time to bring over donated specimens. I think the most likely scenario is going to be to bring stuff to a temp tank at ABC then do a onetime transfer or scheduled transfers.

Neoz I'll have see what's involved with transferring and QTing a fish. That will no doubt involve zoo vets

cully - I'm just saving my favorites from my tank. The rest were going to be sold or turned into the LFS for credit, but if the zoo can use them then I'd love to have a part in that! Let me know when we can start taking stuff to ABC and I'll take a box full of bags up there.

sounds very positive for the zoo to end up with an awesome tank in the future . its awesome how generous you fellow reefers are and my hats off to you !
