Taking Fish on a Plane from Japan

so...based on current relative conversion rates..that baby interruptus is just over $1,000....oh man....

humaguy I think you inverted the calculation though wish you were right. 145000 Yen is about $1800 USD.

Anyways, I'm off to pick up the baby interrupta today. Wish me luck!

Your in for a lot of paper work and time to import wildlife.

First your going to need to contact USFW. If this an non commercial entry you might not have to apply for a permit.
Find a customs broker unless you are able to prepare your own documentation and present it to customs.
Lastly you will need to deal with US Agriculture.

be prepared to spend between $300-$500 on a single importation depending on custom broker fees and possible over time charges by USFW.

Best of luck

I also couldn't help myself from stopping by that store last week when I was in Japan...angels galore and the tiniest interruptus were so TINY. It was a bit of a challenge for me to locate but the glow of actinic LED lights in the darkness led the way. :)

I also believe you wouldn't need an import license on file from the USA to bring one fish in as a personal pet but all wildlife (dead or alive) still requires a form 3-177 import declaration and inspection in the USA. Also, proper paperwork from the exporting country, being a non-CITES transaction helps a great deal.

All went well. No hassles at the airport.

Baby interrupta is doing well. On the skinny side but started taking mysis today.

Awesome. I visit Japan every two years or so, my wife is from Kobe. I have yet to go to this fish store in Osaka, next time for sure! Never knew it was possible to bring a fish back... maybe next time.

Ok guys, I need some advice. I hope this lapse in judgment doesn't make me quit this hobby...

I did not QT the Interrupta because I thought it was QT'ed enough in Japan (it was in it's own tank for a few weeks prior to my purchase). I put it in my DT and it's developed white spots and has been flashing. The fish also looks pale. However, it is eating heartily. No other fish in the display has white spots.

Should I move him to a hospital tank and begin the tank transfer method?

It's even worse than that. If he has Crypto then every fish in that tank must now be considered infected or a carrier. All your fish must be treated with either TT or copper, and the DT left fallow for at least 9 weeks.
