Hey guys, trying to capture the correct color of the corals with my nikon d60.
Any tips, advice, or simple tricks would be greatly appreciated. I have tried just about everything.

it's tricky :)

- always shoot raw & with a tripod. Stock 18-55 will focus at about 11" out. Set camera to Aperture priority mode, set F11 to start with
- take a picture of a stock grey card which is a neutral gray in your tank. I picked up the card at a photo store and had it laminated
- take pictures of some corals
- download the NX2 software from Nikons site (60 day trial)
- color balance against the card (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzvPVgRNk6k)
- copy settings
- open raw pictures of corals and paste settings (it's in the you tube link)
- adjust as needed
- save as JPG with another name
- post really cool pictures :)

Hmm just wondering my-self, would a polarizer lens attachment help any? I know that it can help with the glare aspect. I have a canon 40D (lenses 18-55, 55-200 and 28-135), and I will try to take some pics soon so I will be asking the same question when I do :)

I struggle with lens attachments. Spending all this money on lenses, then throwing a cheapo attachment on the front. I saw a guy break out a 25-70 2.8 lens ($1600) with a $30 screw on on the front. weakest link philosophy - seems like a cheap piece of glass to go through after forking over all that coin on a wicked nice lens...

I wish I could afford 2.8 lenses, but I’m not a "photographer" so I am really happy with what I have! Any of you have an IS(Image Stabilization) option on the lens, if not, just an fyi, I have it in my 28-135 and its well worth it the extra $. After getting used to the IS and switching out to regular lenses I feel the pics become pretty blurry in a lot of cases (maybe it’s just my imagination lol)

Canon user here as well.I agree the IS does help.If shooting in macro though as Blurry pointed out a tripod will be as good or better.Imo.
I have a lot of trouble with my bowfront, sorta like trying to take a pic through a bottle. One thing I noticed is it helps to stay straight on (to the glass) when taking a shot. The same should help with clarity with flat front tanks.Hope this makes sense.

I have keepers that I toss out :)

I share a lot of aquarium photos here because I feel guilty tossing them out without anyone else ever seeing them. I probably delete 100 or more for every one that I keep.

Thank you guys for verifying what I think is a huge part of it. It's not like Glamour Shots. You have to sift through the clinkers to get to a really well taken photograph. But, take into consideration that I know almost nothing about photography, and have yet to take a keeper.
