Tank in the classroom

Derekbc

But I quarantined!
Spent the morning assembling the stand for the JBJ Rimless 30 I won at the FRAG meeting a few months ago. Since I will be teaching 2 blocks of 6th grade science this year, and the majority of the lessons surround water and diversity of life, I'm looking forward to bringing the ocean to my landlocked students.

I have a pair of clownfish for you when your ready.

Thanks, Bob! Hoping to have the tank in the classroom on Monday and get the initial cycle started. Maybe in November?

What size is the one next to it?

My home tank is a Solana 60. It's a great tank, but I must admit I have been bitten by the go bigger bug.

Great idea! When you're ready for stocking, I would be happy to make a donation of coral.

Thanks, lockekeyy!

i have a bunch of candy cane coral for you too

Thanks, rollinnoland!

I can chip in some easy to keep frags as well. JP

Thanks, jporter!

I'll try to post updates on a regular basis.

Derek

The tank has sand and water... Picked up a Current T-5 this weekend--hoping it will support some easy to care for corals... My students are excited!

I have the same tank. Love it! Only problem is without a sump it evaporates like crazy. You may want to put on an ATO in the future.

I also will donate some of my wildly growing silver branching xenia if you would like some.

Thanks! Not sure on livestock, but we did have a discussion today about the tank not being big enough for a Dory fish...

The lights on my tank at home are two AI Sol Blues--they have done great for the 2 years I've had them.

The ATO will be my next purchase--unless I can win one in one of the amazing FRAG raffles. :)

That's great, were you able to use the Pets in the Classroom Grant I linked to before?

You spend $150 locally at fish stores and they reimburse you.

I'll be posting soon about my classroom's (8th grade science) future setups (3 x 20-30gallon tanks). It's great to have a little piece of the ocean in your room. I setup a 14g biocube in my wife's preschool classroom and the kids love it.

When you have things up and running I'd be happy to donate a little birdsnest or other frag that does well under T5s.

What school are you at?

That's very nice of you, dream54ing!

Johanasu, looking forward to seeing your classroom setup. I forgot about the grant program--just so used to out of pocket expenses when it comes to teaching. I'll see if I can utilize the grant moving forward. I teach at Sunset Ridge--in Deer Valley. And you?

I'm over at Mountain Sky in Washington District. I hear you about spending out of pocket, hitting the $250 tax deduction is never an issue!

This is such an awesome thing. Should be able to do a lot with that tank, too. May I suggest a TSB to your stocking list? So full of personality and affordable too!

Good work Derek! I wish I would have been introduced into the saltwater hobby at a young age. I am sure your classroom fish tank will inspire students/parents to setup tanks of their own.
