Tell me about a Sohal

Listen to the advice. I read your other thread, are you indicating you have all your present fish in a 50 gallon tank and the 250 isn't in service yet? I am a little lost.

The 250 is being built. The other fish are in a 50 wide and were very small and got big faster than I expected. The blue angel is in another tank...

The Sohal would not becoming until the 250 is built....

I didn't know the sohal would mess with clown triggers... hmmm... I had no idea they were THAT mean.

I must be really lucky too - I had one for 5 years and he was great - never bothered another fish - or me in the tank.

I have always wanted to try one and did so about a month ago...So far he is infact very bossy, but certainly not an outright killer (as an aggressive Trigger can be for example), I believe he just wants every fish to know he is in charge. He is selective in whom he picks on too, he has never bothered either of my 2 Triggers or my Coral Beauty, but from day one he didn't like my 2 Wrasses. Beautiful fish and very interesting, but be advised they are one of the toughest, and most aggressive fish there is.

As to the person that said they have a poor survival record, this is absolutely incorrect, in fact Bob Fenner considers them one of the, if not the most hardy Tangs there is.

That is good to know. Thanks Kirkaz!

Please all know that I am 100% aware that my fish should not be in a 50 wide at their size but! They are all healthy and will have a new home soon.

Sohal tang is a must have for me. Anyone house them with any large angels?

I just got one around two weeks ago and he eats nori like its going out of style. He is already a fat as#. He is really aggressive thats for sure. I have him in a 180. My camera suck but heres a picture.

They are very hardy, I dont believe that hardiness is an issue, especially since they come from the red sea.

In the wild they guard an area the size of several football fields for harvesting of THEIR algae, hence the reason they are so aggressive. In the wild they are known to attack and injure divers. Aggression comes with size (or limitation thereof). As they grow they demand more area to "patrol" and hence become more aggressive.

Mine also tried to kill my regal and majestic, such is the main reason it was removed from my main tank to live by itself.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you.

+1 - Size means nothing in terms of sohal tangs. I read something on a LFS having a sohal in a display tank in their store and it killed a clown trigger like twice his size.

you are all very helpful.

I am going to try one in my new set up. The beauty of this hobby is that nothing is permanent.

If he doesn't work out I will donate him to a home that can provide.

But I'm not one to give up. I have never heard of anything like a tang killing a clown trigger. are you sure that is true?

Yes I have a pocket guide to marine fish and the author states that the sohal attacks triggers and parrot fishes in the wild. Very true. I don't really care, thats what I wanted so I got him. I knew how they were before I bought one and was o.k. with it. He can kill everything in the tank and I would still have one of the most beautiful fish available to us. JMO

My triggers are on the more docile side... I have some thinking to do.

But wow are they a beautiful fish.

Lets see some more pictures!
Thanks everybody!

Closed.

If you wish to keep all those fish in a 50, and then compound the problem by adding a sohal when you upgrade, this isn't the place that can help you.
