Making fish list for new 250 display (est. 320 g total)

Sohal is one I'm interested in but never come across anyone who owns one.

In general... How are they? Joining some triggers, angels, and three other tangs

Pictures would be fantastic!
Thanks everyone

Mean

Mine actually attacks me when I put my hand in the tank sometimes. He lives by himself because of it.

Good luck

I have heard they live on reef crests with a lot of turbulent flow, become large, and are aggressive. All big negatives for long term success.

it is a very beautiful tang. Should be the last fish added to the tank. Mines actually picks at xenia, soft leather corals and sometimes my torch coral, but it doesn't pick on it to the point that it dies though.

Large (18"), fast swimmers, very aggressive, often eliminate tank mates one by one, poor survival on top of that- all according to numerous posts that I have read from others about this very beautiful but ultimately hard to keep fish.

The only thing I know is that Sohal should be last in the tank... very last... and my buddy at my LFS got tail whipped by one and had to get stitches from its blade.

That doesn't bother me though.... I'll whip it back ;)
Just kidding.. but I love the look of the fish.

Anyone have any pics they can share?

thanks for the info so far!

Let's just say that there's a reason why someone else on another thread referred to it as a "Sohell" just yesterday ; )

I didn't know they were that aggressive. We have smaller ones at the store and I love them, awesome fish.
I would def. listen to these peoples information though as I do not know a lot about them.

A guy I know used to have one in a 180. He got it small and added it last and it was still very territorial. At 8-10" made the 180 look small. All the other fish in that tank pretty much dove for cover anytime the Sohal was near and he paced the tank alot so that was pretty much all the time. He was a beauty but I thought he would be better suited to an agressive setup than a reef.

once you add a sohol, you can not add any more tangs. its meanest fish i have. he is in the frag tank by himself.

When I stocked my 375 I put the Sohol in 3 weeks after the others. He was a model citizen til I had to do some rockwork to get a copperband out. After that he was a ba$%^&. Killed a yellow and a naso. Took him out, put him in qt for 3 weeks and then put him in a 390 with much larger tangs. He then killed a naso 3x his size. He is now swimming in a 280 gallon sump all by himself.

I would def. listen to these people as far as not adding one if it's for your 250. One of the people in the SPS forum had pictures of his 1000 gallon reef and the sohal is huge and dominates that whole tank. Unless he's the only fish in your tank, then it might be OK.

Big, mean, chases my sailfin that is 4 times bigger than him. King of the tank. But he is gorgeous, and eats nori out of my hand.

I have a 5 inch Sohal and so far so good. I also have a blue hippo tang and a purple tang. They all seem to get along. I added a rabbit fish and the purple was the most agressive towards the new addition. We will have to wait and see as it gets bigger. Definitely a beautiful fish. Add with caution if you do and make sure your tank is BIG.

Mine is a model citizen. But listen to other reefers.
I think I'm just lucky.

It is a fish only set up with some mushrooms and polyps for looks... He would be the smallest fish and the last fish...

I wish I could rent one for a month to see how it goes :)

I'll look into it.. I would make sure it was at least 3 inches smaller than my smallest fish.

It doesnt matter how small they are when you get them, they will grow, fast, and mean.

My other half calls ours A$$ohal...hence why he is all by himself.

+1 - Size means nothing in terms of sohal tangs. I read something on a LFS having a sohal in a display tank in their store and it killed a clown trigger like twice his size.
