the 1700g stingray reef

Hi guys, things with the tank are going great. In fact it grew in so much that I harvested over 27 boxes of corals from the system and spread them out. One of my local fellow reefers actually took a full minivan and a compact car of corals just in one day. We filled up 8 thirty gallon bins with corals and quite a few 5 gallon pails.
Any way after moving some stuff around the tank is still full. I took off 8 of the metal halides and replaced them with T-5's. I dropped about 2500 watts off from the system by doing this. I have less sps now and replaced those high light loving corals with less demanding but still colorful alternatives. I still have a ton of sps under the six remaining halides on the system.
The Book: time has not allowed for us to work as extensively on it as we would like. It is still a hope as I believe the hobby could use a good, informative reference guide showing how others have succesfully done these large tanks.

Energy,
would you be willing to sell some of your coral frags? I am moving from a 40 gal reef and now I am starting up a 370 gall (72x48x25) tank, thanks in large to the inspiration your tank gave me from looking at it in the last month or so, and it would be great if I could get a head start on stocking it with corals. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. THanks again for documenting such a beautiful tank. I am sure I am not the only person here you got the nerves to try a big tank because of your thread.

Purdue man- I don't sell corals but I do trade. We can pm and work something out. I'm glad I could be an inspiration. I will try and get more info out on the latest and greatest changes to the system.

Energy,

Good to hear from you. Hope to make it to the cities sometime and see your amazing tank once again. It's been far too long.

Any pics that you could post for us all? I'm sure we'd all love to see it

First of all like all the others congratulations with your tank!! It really looks great, too bad that im living too far away to check it out. But lets get too the point, i understand how you build your pvc rack but how do you secure the live rock on the rack?

Energy - What wattage, how many T-5s did you use to replace your halides with and what kind of results are you seeing? I am currently trying to trim energy cost in my 375gal and lights and pumps(to include skimmer) are my targets. I am just wondering how far can the T-5s penatrate.

I'm back and sorry for the long time lag. I had switched to T-5's for about half of the tank. Overall I think the metal halides gave me greater success. I was also trying to get a l.e.d light manufacturer to donate a light set-up for comparison testing to see how they did but never did get one. I have a bunch of new pictures which should be up in the next year on a possible dedicated website- I just need time. If that happens I will update here and include a link!

This is literally the only thread i subscribe to, truely a beautiful tank, can't wait for the updates for the tank. Always love to hear about the new stuff to this tank.

he got out of the hobby and is now turning the tank into a major vivarium with dart frogs and other amphibians
