The amazing Apple berry monti Palawenensis!

i got one from tyree a few months ago, it faded but the blue polyps are out and it's slowly beginning to color back up

Another M verrucosa? from my reef

Is it just me, or is this just a cool name for a Danae? They look so identical to what used to be sold as Danaes by RM, Verrucosa as others. I have a little colony from an old reefer friend Gordon (Northbay101) and at the time he was sure it was a Danae. Don't get me wrong, its a really cool coral - mine was amazing before my BTA decided to roll over it (no damage, just lost color). It was stunning in Gordon's tank under 250W Aquaconnects. He was barebotton and it encrusted to his glass IIRC.

my palaweensis looks like no other danae in my tank. The structure is much different. That being said alot of the corals shown in this thread look nothing like the palaweensis other than the color scheme.

according to reeffarmers the palaweensis will plate, mine is still very young and has not begun to do this yet.

Also, the verrucosa i got from reeffarmers looks VERY similar to the danae structure, i wouldn't know one from the other if given the pepsi challenge.

FWIW, Tyree got the coral from Reefnroll while out to speak to the BRS, who got it from me, who got it from Warren G. here in the Boston area. I haven't heard from Warren in ages, don't know if he still has a colony.

Here's another photo of the edge of my colony (been hacked a few times). If you leave the colony alone it will form a single very thick plate, very nearly circular, and then slowly begin to add a layer to the plate. Mine gets to the size of nearly a dinner plate before it starts to add the second layer. The species id came from me, years ago paging though Veron's book. I'll be the last to claim I can accurately id corals, but to me it really does look like the photo in Coral of the World. I think there've been a few M. verrucosa's posted in this thread, to me they look different.

For me sometimes it can be very slow for a long time and then start growing quickly (like just about any coral!). My colony had some recent die-back (you can see the dead area and the new growth trying to cover it in the photo), but has recovered and is filling in the dead areas quite nicely. IME, it doesn't like lighting changes very much. Years ago I managed to get the Montipora nudibranchs in a frag tank so I know that they are fond of it, FWIW.

Oh, and FWIW, the title spelling of the thread is wrong. M. palawanensis. Probably named after the westernmost Island in the Philippines, Palawan. Went there once back in 95, unfortunately, I didn't know how to dive at the time! Cool scenery, but quite remote.

nice to see the parent colony mine came from very nice Greg, i hope the chunk i got does well.
FWIW i think im getting some color shift out of the polyps towards the blue polyp.

Awesome Greg, looks beautiful.

BTW, I have your "Aquadelight" and its really becoming one of my favorite corals. Amazing colors under 400W Radiums.

That's very nice, but I've never seen the one I have grow digitate branches.

> I have your "Aquadelight" <

It will form a table top over time if it has enough space. 20 K does make it look fantastic.

I got a nice piece from exotic reefs a while back and it suddenly rtn'd for no apparent reason. I miss that coral.

Could this be the same monti?

That seems to be what they call the branched version
