The Chronicles of my 250g Cube (190g display)

Thank you ReefWaters, let me know how much you get quoted for and who's going to do your cube

Im actually thinking about building it myself. I want it to be rimless and braceless. No one Ive talked to WANTS to build it that way. They also jack UP the price b/c they make the glass thicker.

I only got a few quotes and they were verbal so I dont really remember them exactly. Im pretty sure Miracles In Glass wanted about 900 for a 36 x 36 x 22 cube and about 1200 for 48 x 30 x 22. Aquarium Obsessed wanted about the same. Maybe a little more. I think you can get one from Glass Cages for around 500 or so. And then of course tack on at least 200 more for shipping.

I can get the glass I need locally for about 350 to 450 I think. And no shipping. From what Ive read, you just silicone the pieces together and fill it with water. It actually sounds seductively simple. But the glass I got quoted was not polished like Miracles and Obsessed. It would just be a sanded edge. I think I can live with that for half the cost though.

Thanks again for the compliments.

Why both rimless and braceless just curious. Why not go the eurobrace route?

I really like the rimless and braceless look with no hood. Like the Japanese tanks. If I had a hood that sits on the tank, I would definitely go with Eurobracing. I want to basically build a short canopy/hood that will hang over the tank with the bottom edge about 10 to 12 inches over the tank rim.

Here is a pic of the tank from http://reefaqua.com

But I really feel like Im hijacking this thread. We are here to talk about zoos tank.......unless he says otherwise. :p If anyone would like to discuss my tank further, please go to my thread here. I really do appreciate all the interest though.

zoos, did you reduce or split the outlets for the CL that come through the bottom of the tank or did you just leave them as the 45s? Also, how are you directing them? In other words, where are they pointed in the tank?

Im still debating with myself as to whether I want a CL and/or Tunze Streams. But I know I want to get rid of all the powerheads. I wonder if the Streams alone would be enough. I would go with two mounted in oposite corners. If so, thats what I would want to go with. But if not, I would want to add the CL with a four way OM with all four outlets coming through the bottom of the tank. Then I worry that it would be TOO much flow. Of course, I dont know if there is such a thing as too much flow.

What do you guys think?

Hey guys, nope I don't mind talking about your tanks, if anything I like it, and it gives me ideas as well, so go on and chat away. Reefwaters my cl has 2 2" drains and is then reduced to 4 1" returns, I don't have a 4-way (wish I did) but I had no space, you can see the returns here.

Actually it was frustrating, since I have a 75gpd R.O/DI, but it was all worth it

Felix

lol

Yeah
I guess that would be pretty frustrating... it took 3 days to fill up?

How about these poor guys filling up 1000+ gallon systems with 100gpd units. :eek2: ..... That's got to be frustrating.

OMG! I dont think I could handle that lol

i think if i was setting up a system that big, id have to buy like 20 row units, lol

Patience would not be an otion lol.

Okay, zoos said I could talk about my tank! :D I keep debating with myself on what I want to do. The 36x36 cube would be great but it doesnt buy me much more room. Im also having a huge problem with moisture in my house right now and I dont like that. So I had the ingenuous realization last night that I could turn my sun room into a fish room and set a 220g tank in the wall! :bounce1: :bounce2: :bounce3:

This is all great, good, and exciting, until you start running some numbers on what it would cost. :rolleye1: But I would have a full fish room and no moisture connected to my main house in any way. I would also have a huge tank to play with. Im excited but I havent made the commitment to do it yet. Its a HUGE decision. We're talking about playing with the big boys here. BIG BIG BIG. Big fuge, big sump, big skimmer, big reactors, big lighting, and lots of it, and a prop tank.

Anyway, Ill stop rambling. At what point do you think too much is too much?

If you can afford it,
threres no such thing as too much. :)

I cant wait to see your setup! :)
:smokin:

I just cringe at the thought of how much it will cost me to do this. Can I afford it? Technically....Yes. But I will have to sacrifice a lot of other things to do so. I also have to consider the fact that that money could be used as an investment instead of spending it. So there is technically a small loss of income if I do it. It is my passion though and it can be compared to buying a small boat or joining a golf club. Probably cheaper actually. I also worry about wanting to upgrade that system eventually. And then what do I do if I move. Sure I can move the whole system but would I want to? And if I wanted out of that system, could I recoup even a small amount of the expense?

Sorry for rambling. These are all rhetorical questions. Chime in if you like. :D

hmmmm. the bigest question i see is ...will you be moving? and What is your financial state?--dont need details, but could you actually aford what you have proposed?

Okay Okay Okay :D Can I pay for it outright? No. Could I use some extra (left over) money from a home equity loan to pay for it? Yes.

But really this is what bothers me the most. I dont REALLY want to use loaned money, especially money meant to increase the value of my house, to purchase a tank. But again, there are 100 ways of looking at it. People take out loans all the time to buy a sports car or a boat or a pool, etc...... is there really a difference? For some reason I feel like there is. Maybe just b/c reefing is not as popular or widespread as say boating is.
