The Foam/rock Projects Here Thread

just to help out a little...here is what I used for my rock wall. The foam was purchased from True Value (black foam $7.00 a can) and the epoxy was from a local hobby shop.($4.50 per pack)

Hi

I have my wall in place, tunze rocks all seem good, cant hear any vibration so really pleased.

I have filled up with ro and have a sort of smell coming from the water, have not added the salt yet as a bit unsure about what too do. I dont want to fill up with the salt as its about 1000 litres.

Do people think I should empty the water and fill with ro again or salt and hope it will be ok??

$4.50 a pack??? Even at the sticker price of $6.99, that's a steal. I'm in CT and had to pay $16.95 for that same thing! Wow.

Don't waste your RO water ... fill it with tap water, let it run with pumps for a day and then empty it and refill.

I would do this no less than 2-3 times ... and I would also run some carbon in a cheap internal filter to help pull out some of the residue.

Then when you've done this a few times - empty and allow to dry a bit.

so whats the longest time one of these rockwalls has been in a tank? any problems or failures? all of these projects are extremely amazing, but i would like to know how long it will hold up. thanks

60 long, 18 deep, 29 tall. the whole build with pics is on the RC local club fourms, southwest, southern arizona sierra vista site

i wanted to put my two cents in, i see a lot of debate on if you have to epoxy coat, great stuff, and if it will color up, i did not build rock structures, but in one of my sumps, one of the bulkheads was leaking badly, so we sealed it with a big helping of great stuff, and it has never broken down or caused a problem and it has been there for two years, also it colored up rather quickly and looks better than some of my rocks, so to say i have an extremely cool looking bulkhead. just my two cents

How long after filling the tank can livestock be added? I am just wondering if the epoxy and foam still leach out chemicals for a short period of time after water is added.

i had fish in my wifes nano that i foamed with in a week....the kicker is i drilled that nano and hooked it up to my main system and nothing was efected..i dont use epoxy though with my foams

All I can say wow. I got sucked in 4 days ago to foam wall by looking at puffers wall. Now I am really torn. I am getting close to finishing my 215 in wall. Itha has had eater and 1 damsles init since early october. It runs off a 90g sump in the basement. I realllly want a foam wall. I was thinking of making a 3 piece with with mostly rock and black foam. I am planning on painting on portland cement #2 in 3 or 4 coats after with some sand in it. and letting it dry for a few weeks. then soaking in a tub fed by my ro reject water for a few weeks. Then using epoxy to glue it to parts of the tank back. Can I put this in a running tank or am I just asking for disaster.

well the crud in the reject water will soak into your rock wall that your soaking then leach out in to your tank when you put it in....second...i really dont think you want to put fresh epoxy in a running tank...it may release some really nasty stuff into your tank :(

I'm with you to this point

Then you lost me.
1) if your using rocks with foam why would you cover in cement it just negates the point of rock (since you need full coverage to insure a solid bond to foam and full coverage)
2) this will add weeks (up to 6+) to your drying time (drying for a couple weeks with cement is still going to require you to soak in water and perform constant changes untill the ph stablizes)
3) I wouldn't use exoxy to attach it - you can design it so that it does not need to be attached to the tank by giving it a larger base then top or use a reef safe putty
4) with that design your asking for issues unless you are very careful

I would consider using just the foam and rock, (if you want to cover the foam use expoxy and sand) then let it soak in fresh water for a week before adding to the tank.
