The "Hitchhiker's Guide" to the Maxi-Stream mod

so your gonna want to keep these things well attatched to your tank wall. cause if they come lose, they arent blowing a small hole in your sand bed, they're clearing half the sand out.

and oddly my other one stopped turning. no idea why. tapped it a few times and it started spinning again. Im going to investigate this matter more tomorrow. right now I have to figure out how to get 40lbs of sand off my LR and coral.

I think with this much flow this easy to get, I might just go barebottom, Im thinking 3 or 4 of these in a 75 barebottom should get some nice movement going.

Clean the impeller/magnet assembly. I have had this same thing happened and the problem was calcium buildup which caked up the magnet and rod preventing it from spinning. A 15 minute vinegar bath solved that.

Thanks for your help. I am thinking of two 900 maxi's with dual 1.5 inch props then. Good enough for a 30"BB cube? we will find out.

I have read this thread a bit and it seems like a great mod. I just have a couple of questions though. Is the prop glued on the rigid tubing? I am a little confused on the stopper too. I know that the impellar may turn either clockwise or counterclockwise hence the stopper. Is the prop constantly touching the stopper even if its spinning the right way? I love my Seio 1100 but hate the fact that it jams up on a wavemaker. Im tired of waiting for this so called seio controller that is suppose to come out. Prolly couldnt afford it anyways.

1 can be glued or not.. depends on how tight a fit you have.

2 the prop only touches the cross brase (stopper) when it spins the incorrect way. Once it hits to brace it then changes its spin direction and goes back down toward the base and forces the water out. The prop cannot constantly touch the brace or it would not spin or not spin with any efficiency. Back a few pages are quite a few pics.

spinning backwords, as youd expect puts opposite force on the propellor and pulls away from the power head and towards the stopper. when it turns the right way it pushes into the powerhead.

this was a little confusing to me when I read it because I didnt realize the entire magnet could move out of the cylinder. but it can, and it will if it spins the wrong way.

So, the prop pushes out if its spins the wrong way and gets sucked in if its spinning the right way. Ok then. Hopefully I can get started this week. Hopefully local hobby shops here would have what I need. Thanks for the info!

Just finished my second Maxi-Stream mod. This time I used two of the Nitro props. My other Maxi has duel dumas props.

The duel Dumas one puts out about the same as my Seio 1100.

The duel Nitro Maxi puts out way more than the Seio, just wish I had the Seio 2600 to compare it to.

Good info.Do you have any pics of your finished mods?

I found the hardest part of this mod is trying to drill out the impellers to slip over the rigid tubing.I don't have a drill press.I drilled mine out in small increments, but it's really hard to hold onto the impeller.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe boring the props in increments is the only correct way, no matter if you have a press or not.

its how I did it with a press, no doubt having 2 hands to steady the prop was a big help though. perhaps have someone just hold the drill so you can push the prop onto it.

I used a 3/16th drill bit. I held the prop in my hand, and the drill was in reverse, took a little longer to drill but it worked.

Oh ya, I used a 5/32 drill bit first.

I had been thinking that the more slots in the side up to the front, the more indrect flow you will get. props pushing flow out the front as well as the slots near front. Do you find that to be so....? I say this because if that is true, then makers should bare that in mind when desining their pvc housing. Ie.. if you want more straight out force then less to no slots near the end... if you want flow in all directions.. then more slots near the end.
I think I'm going to make a mj 400 stream for the other end of my tank, and might try to get more indirect flow.

I found that if you put slots past the beginning of the propellor, then it shoots flow out the remaining slots. This cuts down on usable flow. I like the flow better this way.

Ah ok, so its a combo of slots to the front and props to the back to give some diffused flow. Interesting... maybe no slots on top (so not to put too much water to the surface) and more slots to the sides and bottom. to give random water movement. :)

Hey gang, just wanted to mention, I made a mod to my MJ Stream... I used the rigid air tubing for my cross brace. This works very well except for when the prop hits it when its going the wrong way... the prop would bang on the cross brace for quite some time before reversing direction (probably because the rigid tubing is smooth and rounded). So I drilled a hole perpendicular to the cross brace and just in a little. I inserted a short 1/4" piece of rigid tubing. Now when the prop is headed out it now hits this little piece of rigid tubing and immediately reverses direction. really nice compared to what it was doing.

Hey all, great work, I was looking for a little feed back on putting these things on a wave mavker. I have two seios in my tank now and the only way I would replace them would be if i could build a few of these and put them on a wavemaker / timer. I believe the only flaw to be the stopper wearing down the prop over time. What do you think about eliminating the stopper and allowing the magnet to pull out and correct naturally. Is that too loud, or does it take too long, or does it have to pull out too far. Really what i am asking is there a way to correct the direction of the prop with out uising the "blade hitting something method". any info would be great.

PS my Idea was to use friction to stop the prop from going the wrong direction. IE when the assemble pushes out have the end of the rigid tubing grind on the cross member.
