The Life Reef Skimmer Club

I'll be picking up a used VS2-24" for my new 150g build but need to source a pump.

I can pick up a used Waveline DC 10000 Gen 2 is this too much pump for the skimmer?

That pump would work fine and you could always dial it down if you wanted to. For these skimmers, more flow is always better than less.

any tips for noise reduction? not sure if it gets quieter as it breaks in but the noise is fairly noticeable from the venturi. Hardly hear the mag 9 pump at all

I run the hose through a co2 scrubber which acts as a silencer of sorts. Now my mag 12 is loader then the Venturi. It's still not a quiet skimmer by any stretch but I run an open sump in my bedroom. Acts like white noise for me and helps me sleep lol

Hey guys, I just setup my 2nd 24" LifeReef skimmer (last one was about 2 years back) and it is by far the loudest thing on my tank, primarily its the air noise. Do you guys experience that as well? I don't remember it being this noticeable before, but I'm also using a different pump. I'm using a Sicce 4.0 on the skimmer now and before I used a Waveline DC pump. Any feedback would be appreciated.

The Sicce pumps are noisy, very similar to running a mag drive. A DC pump should help a lot and you can make a silencer for the Venturi as well.

New Member Lifereef Skimmer Club!

I got myself a Christmas present! A brand new Rocky Mountain High SVS2-24.
It is awesome! I pulled my old Reef Octopus out of the sump and got the new
SVS2-24 running recently. Much quieter than the RO and more bubbles than a Lawrence Welk marathon. (most won't get that).
Tank is pretty clean, maybe even too clean, right now as I am fighting what I believe to be a dino issue, so I don't have any dirty, filthy skimmate photos to share but with the bubble action I now have it is sure to rise to the occasion soon. Actually that dino surfacing was the initiative for me to get the new skimmer in the first place. What a difference and it very well made. Craftsmanship shows!!!!

Thanks to d2 Dennis for letting us know this quality product was out there to be had.

Need some pump help.

I've had a Lifereef VS3-24" skimmer for 12 years. It's always worked pretty well though sometimes I have problems getting regular skimmate.

Anyway, I've been running a Mag 12 on it for years and decided to buy a new pump for Christmas and was debating between a Mag 18 (which I've heard is noisy) and a Syncra Pro rated at 1900 gph. Well it came Friday and I installed it yesterday and it doesn't seem to be any better than the Mag 12 I had.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I don't have room for a 30". I sometimes go for a week or more with only 1/2 inch of skimmate and I can't believe that is correct for my 225 gallon tank. I don't have a lot of fish, but do have 3 at 5" or more (foxface and two hippos).

Thank u d2 mini for starting this thread. I just ordered a svs3 24 wth blue plates "to match my trigger triton 44". and a 9.5 pump. I plan on upgrading to a jebao dc6000 if it fits to match my return so I can use it as a backup. I've been planning this upgrade for months and this thread has been very very helpful.thanx again everyone except that 45 guy the next 4 to 5 weeks are gonna go real slow

I just learned about how these life reef skimmers can be used with ozone and how they don't release any residual ozone back into the room. I wish I had known that a few months back when I was skimmer shopping!

The Mag 12 and the Syncra Pro 1900 GPH both put up about 12 ft of max head so it is not surprising that they perform the same. The Mag 18 puts up over 15 ft and should perform better. Other than that I think you are into one of the DC pumps. Look for a pump that will put up about 15 ft of head at 350 gph, which is about the flow rate through the injector. The head pressure is much more important than the max flow rate of the pump.

You have to remember that the lifereef design pulls air through the skimmer cup causing evaporation which can mask how much skim you've actually pulled. I sometimes will stay at a constant height for a week or so but notice the skim in the cup darken significantly. Finally I find lifereefs to be very efficient and only pull a skim when a tangible organic load is present. Some people with lower bioloads will also run the skimmer only a few days a week or 12 hrs on 12 off. I hope this helps and as a side question how noisy is the syncra pro? My mag 12 is very noisy but with the space I have for the pump the syncra pro is one of the only pumps that will fit in that space.

Dross - Thank you for that advice. Too bad I didn't realize that before I ordered the Synchra. I'll keep that in mind. I'm going to stick it out for a while to give things a chance and then decide if I want to buy another pump.

I actually raised the water level about an inch and that seems to have had a small effect. We'll see.

Orcus Varuna - I hadn't really considered evaporation and that may be part of the issue. The higher water level may make it easier to see. I definitely get a thick coating of very solid gunk all the time. I can't raise the water level in the skimmer itself because I'm already at the top of the skimmer body.

I find the Synchra pump about as loud as the Mag 12. Initially while my head was under the tank :spin1: it seemed louder than the Mag, but outside the tank I haven't really noticed a difference.

Just joined the club with a second hand svs-24 (version 1 i assume) going by the design. It is powered by a Jebao DC12000 pump running with two lights on the controller. It has replaced my Bubble Magus Curve 7.

It is just breaking in at the moment after giving it a deep clean. The previous owner had some serious build up.

I am currently running my VS2-24" on a 150g tank with a Waveline DC10000 pump and it seems to be working well. I was wondering though if a RO Varios 6 would be enough pump for it? The Varios is currently my return pump but I'd like more flow through the tank so was thinking of swapping the two pumps. But, if the Varios won't be a great choice for the Lifereef then I won't bother making the swap.

Assuming it is the same as the Waveline DC10000II listed on Marine Depot, it will deliver about 15.5 ft at 300 gph which is about the rate you can expect to actually feed the Skimmer. The Varios 6 is only about 12 ft at the same flow rate. There are people using pumps with about the same 12 ft head (e.g. Fluval SP4, Sicce 5.0, Mag 12) that are satisfied, but I would not expect it to feed as much air and water and consequently not perform as well as your current pump which should be equivalent to a Mag 18 on that skimmer.

That was kind of what I was wondering/fearing. There's a reason I went with the Waveline (yes, the same one you referenced) on the skimmer. It fits well. Really, in the end I probably just need to upgrade the return pump to something more powerful if I want more flow through the system.
