The Life Reef Skimmer Club

I have the 24 " on my 105 with a 20 gallon fuge and a 25 gallon sump. And i have no problems at all. No algea issues no cyno issues. Nitrates always 5ppm.

No one is saying the skimmer isn't good. I'm saying that a rating of 250g for a 24" is ridiculous.

If you were setting up a 250, would you buy that size for your tank?

Well i had a lot of conversations with jeff. I got the fuge sump and skimmer from him. He also told me it would be good for up to 250. But i tend to think that is saying if i wanted to go to a larger tank it would still be good for it. But i you called him im sure he would say to go for a larger skimmer on a 250 cause you would be maxed out at the start. But yes i think my skimmer would work on a larger tank that was properly stocked and properly fed. Witch most tanks are not. And no i wouldnt buy a 24 for a 250 for the reasons i stated above.

Most ratings are for a light bio load, I take ratings with a grain of salt. With a small neck that the Life Reef skimmer has you can get away with a bigger skimmer.

Bayoupr has used a VS3-48 on a 180 and worked well

That's what I would do as well for that size. Recirculating, preferably.

I have the SVS2-24 in-sump skimmer with larger collection cup, been up and running for about 5 weeks in my 75g. I have a small bio load (only two clowns, and medium size CUC) but really havent had much skim which I know is fine, water parameters have been good.

Question is, it's not dirty but should I clean it once a month when there's been low to no bio load like I have? And how do you clean it?

I think I've cleaned the body of my SVS3-30 twice in the 4 years or so that I've run it. I wipe the neck out weekly with a damp paper towel, and I clean the cup weekly as well.

To clean the cup I just use an acrylic scrubby and warm running water, nothing else. I seem to get better foam in the neck/cup when the neck isn't all caked up with nog solids, which I get a pretty solid layer in the upper neck within just a few days.

If yours isn't dirty, I don't think I'd bother cleaning it until I saw a buildup in the neck.

Well I've had the vs3-24 on my 120 for years and have really enjoyed it I also have a refugium with caulerpa in it. If I could on a 220 I would go for a larger skimmer at least a 36 to give you som extra room. Could a 24 work, yes but it would definately be straining in my opinion.

If I can't find someone w a larger used Lifereef to trade w, I'll put mine up for sale and buy another one from Jeff. Thx for all the input.

I have a Lifereef skimmer. Just because I do doesn't mean that I have to believe or agree with everything on their website.

If I didn't own one, maybe then you could stake me to task. However I have had this skimmer for around 6 months as well as having another single mazzei venturi recirculating skimmer, a dual mazzei venturi recirculating skimmer, and then a host of Bubble King, H&S, Deltec, SWC, and Warmer Marine skimmers before these.

So are are welcome to your opinion of my comments, however my comments are based on actual experience using these skimmers on MY tanks.

Ok. But you didn't answer the question. Theres been many threads where you recommend someone to use a different skimmer then Lifereef. My question is why? Are you a competitor? A financial backer in a competing company? Or just a disgruntled consumer? If its a disgruntled consumer, tell us why.

I listed quite a few needlewheel skimmers above. I find the Lifereef better than all of them. I don't find it better than the other venturi skimmer that I mentioned. If I was a competitor or a financial backer then I would be constantly mentioning the name. But I don't and therefore you are off base.

I don't understand why you think it is odd that I don't gush over Lifereef? Its a skimmer, not my wife. Again, I say said I like the skimmer, but just because I own it doesn't mean that it has to be the best one I have ever owned. It also doesn't mean that I have to agree with everything on their website. It's a skimmer, not a religion.

Btw, there are posts where I have said to get a Lifereef skimmer over another brand. However if someone says a 24" on a 244 gallon skimmer, I am going to say that it is too small. Btw, if you look up further I thought the VS-48 would be a good choice. Did I recommend another brand? No.

Anyway let's not continue back and forth on this. I have no ulterior motives, my opinions are based on my usage of equipment. If you think differently, then I can't change that nor will I continue to try.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't do a 24" on a 240.
My 30" on my 200g with almost 150g more in frag, fuge and sump has worked out great. It has it'd down times so I know its keeping up.
I'm not a heavy feeder and I'm not that heavily stocked in fish though and I think that makes a big difference on which size skimmer you choose.

I am having problems with salt creep getting built up in my mazzie. I have to unhook it and suck water through it almost daily or after two days the water level in the skimmer is low. I burned my reefkeeper in a cracked tank episode so I can't pump water through it automatically. When I do do that the skimmer overflows for a min and fills the cup halfway anyways. I have to put the hose in water for two seconds to have it not flow over... got any suggestions?

Do you have the air line plumbed into the collection cup pulling moist air?

Yes, is that the problem? I used to have a t in the line with one extending over the skimmer pull fresher air and I don't remember it doing this as often then.

Salt creep is due to water evaporating and the salt being left behind.... pulling dry air will cause this to happen.

If it's plumbed just into the collection cup this won't be an issue. The monster will form condensation on the air line and prevent salt build up

Here it is in the sump:

Even with the custom cup, it's too tall to remove the cup without tilting the entire skimmer body. It's not ideal, but it's working. I'm currently trying to track down the flow curve for the Waveline DC12000 so I can set it according to Jeff's recommendation.

The DC12000 maxes out at ~3100gph and there are a lot of bubbles in the skimmer body when I have it at the highest setting but the venturi is very very loud. When I set it to what I think is 1000-1200 gph, it barely produces any bubbles as in the picture above. Perhaps it's just breaking in.
