The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

lovely, how did you fit the 2 250s in, were they hanging above the tank or built into the hood?

I've never had a hood over that tank, just used wire cable susepsions connected to the pendants hanging from the ceiling! I had the 250s hanging long end from front to back of tank and had them seperated by about 3in over the center of the tank. Worked well, but i will never go back after using the Lumenbright.

Fazio,

Very nice looking tank and outstanding growth on your SPS! I love the blue stags. Is that a Mimic Tang?

Glad to have you in our corner!

Corner Pentagon

Corner Pentagon

This is the tiny space that my wife has surrendered to me to fit my first SW tank ever. I have never really lliked the bow front tanks and I was wondering where you guys with pentagon shaped corner tanks have ordered yours from and how much they cost you.

What sump options have you found?

This tank would work out to around 50 gallons.

Whats the smallest sump I could get away with?

I wont have ANY space to place anything thats not in the bottom of the stand.

I need recomendations on Skimmer brands and models, sump makes and models etc etc etc.

Vertex IN-80 or 100 would be a great size to keep your tank clean. You're sump will most likely need to be DIY from acrylic to be able to fit anything under a corner stand. I think most of the guys/gals on here have made their own sumps. Pretty much any skimmer that has a good reputation; MSX, ASM, Vertex, Reef Octo, Euro Reef, etc... that are rated for around twice your system volume.

Yes to all. Single 400w SE 12K Reeflux in a LG lumen bright reflector, which covers the entire tank perfectly and have been using for the past 8 months 8hrs a day. I would never go back to 2 250s after using this setup. I have no canopy, open top, with pendant hanging by cable suspensions from the ceiling. I built a custon acrylic sump that fits under the stand, mainly as a refugium. Then i have an MR2 skimmer.

I'm using an all-glass 44g pentagon. i drilled the back to allow the tank to sit closer to the wall. i already had a tank/stand but i purchased a new tank for about $150.

as far as a sump, the stand only allows for a 10g tank but if you remove the wood top that would sit under the tank you could drop in a 15G. you could go custom and get some more G's.

Hey Everybody, I have not posted here in a while. I've been pretty busy working on my system. I recently acquired a 150 Gallon Frag tank that is on the other side of the wall of my corner tank in the garage. I plumbed it together with my 54 with a 40 long custom sump that includes an ASM G3 with mesh mod (I am loving this skimmer!). Blackthunda77 has been giving me a lot of help along the way and it is much appreciated. I will post some pics of the 150 when I get the eggcrate in there and start filling it with frags. The dimensions are 6 feet long x 30" wide x by 16" tall. It is made from 1/2" glass and was custom built in Miami. In the meantime here is an updated picture of the corner tank. It is so nice to have all the noise from the tank out in the garage. Nothing like the having a tank to look at but not hear, lol. Hope everyone is doing well. I have some reading to do to catch up.

92G bowfront lighting question

92G bowfront lighting question

hi there

I currently have 2 150w DE MH lights.....I am wondering if these are sufficient really for this tank. I see mostly 250w MH in everyones posts anymore and am wondering if I need to invest in a new lighting system..

So, I want to stay with MH lights but am wondering...do I upgrade now?

When I got the tank almost 4 years ago this is what the LFS set me up with and told me I could pretty much grow any coral under it, flash forward all these years and knowledge and I think that guy was an idiot on almost everything he said to me so now I am wonderings...

The tank has been LPS dominated with a few softies <note to self, NEVER buy pulsing xenias again...damn weeds>
and now we have added a few of the hardy SPS as well and would like to continue down that path....

any thoughts would be helpful

I think that should be plenty of light for what you said you want to keep. If you upgrade to a 250w you would get more intense light deeper in the tank. If you are just planning on keeping lps and softies you should be fine. Just keep the sps toward the top of the tank.

thanks for the response.....so what is everyone else keeping that demands the 250W.....SPS for the most part? Also I don't have actinics....should I? or is the blue from my 20k sufficient ?

Hey everybody, i cant believe how big this thread has gotten. I skim through every once in a while and see some incredible tanks. Im just posting a couple pictures of my 54, since its been a while. I have been very busy the past couple of months, so my tank has been the one suffering. Ive lost a couple of my favorite colonies due to lack of circulation. Its getting harder and harder to create adequate flow, as my corals get larger. However, since your tanks have been so inspiring, im back at it. thanks

Sorry guys I lost this thread for a while.

Sorry guys I lost this thread for a while.

Vertex IN-80 or 100 would be a great size to keep your tank clean. You're sump will most likely need to be DIY from acrylic to be able to fit anything under a corner stand. Thanks for the recommendations Jim. The Vertex skimmers don't seem as frighteningly expensive as some I've seen...good tip. I didn't know the "twice my system volume" parameter either.

I haven't been able to find many people willing to make a glass corner pentagon tank, especially in Florida. I'm a little worried about having just "anybody" do it for fear of a seal failure and/or just generally poor construction.

The sump I imagine would be easier since it can be acrylic.

Have you got any pics Charles?
I wasn't able to find any AGA corner pentagon shaped tank, and they told me they dont custom make them. They also told me that they won't drill a 36gallon bowfront for an overflow:mad2:

Did you purchase the pentagon for $150 new or used? If new, from where?

I wonder if an L shaped sump would add more volume and fit through the doors on the stand, if you "snake" it in just right and the dimensions were well calculated.

I'd like to run a hood for the lighting fixture and was wondering if anybody has used a stagered bulb system with perhaps two T5HO 24" bulbs with a bit of overlap at the front, maybe a CF 17" in the middle, and a small MH in the back corner with a reflector? Perhaps a ring of LED actinics/moonlights/etc around the perimeter of the hood?

Does anybody know how to or who can design a closed loop system for a tank? Where could I find info on learning how to plan such a setup? One of the people in Melbourne, FL that I found willing to quote me for a glass corner pentagon didn't know how to plan out a CL system?

Can a CL use a sump/skimmer/ATO etc? And How?

I'm a nooob, I KNOW!:o

SDOGG - Stunning!!!! I love your tank so much, and someday hope to have my 54 look as astonishing as yours. Did you loose that vivid teal acro colony? I remember that one from your older pics where there seems to be a bare spot now, and that was one of the corals that appealed to me alot. Do you still have all 3 wrasses and the clown? I just talked to one of my friends and he said he would trade me all his smaller fish and shrimp for my Wartskin Angler, which i've been wanting to get rid of anyways. So hopefully, I can keep the ones I want and trade the others in for a Wrasse collection of my own. Again, i love your tank. It's been one of my biggest inspirations! I never would imagine that you could cram so many corals into a 54gal. Great job!
