Treating with Vitamin C

Has anyone seen a growth on Cyano while dosing? I have seen a slight film of cyano on some parts of the tank.

puffer, i just got the same VC as you but dont know how to measure it exactly.
i know 1/4 of teaspoon is 1112 mg, but then i only need 200. is there a way that you use to measure exactly for you?
thanks.

Anything that requires less than 1/8 tsp, I just add that (like for my 15g). How big is your tank? I'm assuming it's a small nano?

What is your reaaon fore treating--general betterness of the corals or do you have issues with them?

mine are 16gal w/ 5gallon built in refugium (21g total), i just want to improve the corals. and couple of mine PE have a bell shape for the last 5-7days.

Whats the point Jeff? Nobody on the skeptic side (heheh) ever said it was detrimental to the tank or anything like that. We all saw that it has a positive effect on the tank. It was the WAY in which it works that was being argued over. We argued VC was nothing more than a carbon source, the opposition argued that it was a helpful anti-oxidant. Both true statements. The discussion went in circles with no resolution. Things will remain unchanged:

People who want to understand water chemistry will continue to be skeptical and scientific about what is added to their tanks. Things are added for a reason and to fulfill various need of tank inhabitants and of course to keep our water as close to NSW as possible.

Others will just continue to stick their head in the sand and just go with what works without caring why it works. No VC users will even test their water for the presence of vitamin C even though the reagent has been made known in this thread. I think, that hammers home the skeptics point, that is puffy and all of the other VC users really have no idea what L-ascorbate is doing to their tank. There has been nothing but anecdotal evidence shown here and that is really the only indesputible fact we have on the subject:

Nobody has used science to determine how and why Vitamin C helps in an aquarium. Period. There is no point in arguing this, it is fact.

Lol. I used to be like you.

Logical?:p

As far as Puff's pictures, there's really not much to be said... I see moderately healthy polyps that seem to be stretching for light and have decent colors. Nice looking tank, but I don't see anything special that shows what a big help vitamin C is.

Wow, talk about denial. I think calling those polyps "moderately healthy" is a far stretch my friend.. Did you see some of the before pictures?

You have to see it in person. I wish my reef looked that moderatly healthy and less special. Jeni has one of the, if not the, most eye-catching tank that I have ever seen. And I have seen a few in my day. I took care of it over one of her vacations and was nervous about doing anything to it.

So i started adding ascorbic acid last week, and other than it dropping ph slighly (from 8.1 to 7.9) it seems to be doing great things. But there is no real evidenace that it is vitC only. I haev noticed i dont need to clean glass every 2 days, 5 days and counting, still not bad. Biggest improvement has been my red and blue zoas are wide open, very wide open.

I started dosing VC 6 days ago. I'm using 1000mg buffered tablets from GNC. My water volume is approx. 62 gallons. I dosed 500 mg 2x a day for 2 days, then 1000 2x for 2 days, then 1500 2x for 1 day, and 2000 2x a day yesterday and this morning. 2000 mg in 62 gallons is just under 10 ppm, right?

I am hoping to improve some melting zoa's. My 5 polyp AOG are down to 1, and it has been closed for 2 weeks. I also have a 3 polyp frag of orange zoas that are closed, and 2 other colonies that have some closed polyps. So far no improvements but it is probably too soon, right?

My questions are:

- what ppm should I be aiming for for problem zoas?
- since I started dosing, all my zoas and shrooms are completely closing up at night, when before they only sometimes and partially closed. Is this normal and OK? They come back out during the day.
- after I dose, my sun corals open up :) I think they just feel the particles and think I'm feeding them, but is it possible that they actually trying to eat the VC?
- I use a poly pad in a basket where my tank feeds into my sump, that I change once a week. It never clogs up enough that it holds any water, until yesterday, when I noticed that it was so clogged that it was holding about 2" of water. It is only 5 days old. Does the VC keep particles together, making them bigger, that would be trapped more by the poly?

I took some before pics, so hopefully soon I can post them with some afters!

What is the longest period of time anybody has been dosing? Has it been continuous? And has there always been a continual noticable improvement of your livestock?

I've been dosing about a year now. Everything still looks fantastic. I still lose a few new frags to melting but not nearly almost everything, like I used to.

I stopped dosing vitamin c for 6 monhs or so and started to see a huge slow-down of growth in mostly softies. I started up again 3 months ago and things have been great since. Total for about a year now total.
