No, the pump is not strong enough, you could on the 9010 though.

OK thanks perhaps my best option is to go with 9005 unless that's just too marginal for a 54g? My current skimmer is rated for 125g skims well when the pump is working but I'm looking for better reliability ...

also I wish there was an alternative to that bright blue sponge. This is going right in the tank right? Black would be less noticeable. Or is this really meant for a sump application -- an internet vendor says Tunzes are "High quality in sump skimmers for small to large aquariums". I'm a bit hesistant about how this is going to work. (Of course I have a big honking PH inside the tank for my current skimmer and a big ugly oil slick since its been out of commission for most of the last 6 weeks ).

Anybody have any advice here? I'd love a more reliable solution ...

If you're using the skimmer in tank, you don't use the output pipe/sponge so all you see will be black. If you're using it in your sump, you use the output pipe but the sponge is optional. . .it's there to reduce microbubbles.

Hey thanks catastrofe. I've never seen one of these in person. So how far below the surface is the intake then when HIT (hanging in tank ), will it be able to handle the surface scum?

The 9000 series aren't "surface" skimmers. The water intake is toward the bottom of the skimmer, regardless of whether you run it "in-tank", or "in-sump".

The best way to deal with surface scum is to see it as an indicator of insufficient flow. If the flow is sufficient there is no gradient of protein content and surface skimming is not necessary.

Roger, I have a constant water level in my sump, can I do away with the outlet pipe ?? (I had the sump designed around the 9015 :eek2: ) hehe

The water level is about 0.25"-0.3" below the blue line on the skimmer ..

Yes, you can run it without the pipe, use the intank set up.

Great thread. I'm looking into upgrading my skimmer. Will the 9010 be overkill for a 58G reef with sps?

It would be a bit of overkill but it is the way to go if you plan to use the skimmer in sump as the kit to run a 9005 in sump is optional and brings the cost to within $20 of the 9010.

Hi guys,

I am having trouble getting my skimmer to work at its best. Mostly pulls off very wet skim, but can set it to pull off dry skim. Sadly neither seem to remove all the dusty detrius from the tank? It's being used with a Compact Kit 16 sump from Tunze.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I am getting a lot of microbubbles from my overflow pipe (the one the sponge is on) on my 9010. When these build up my return pump shoots them back into my main tank, is there any way to mitigate that problem?

The detirtus should be being removed by the 3166 more so that the 9010. With sump sets it is more difficult as you can only remove what gets to the sump and often the detritus doesn't get to the surface where it is skimmed into the sump. It just is a slower process than with an in tank filter.

Great thread - this looks like it could be my perfect skimmer. How much clearance do I need to remove the collection cup. Right now its 22" to the support beam above my sump. Also does the 9010 need any adjustments to work in sump at a water depth of 10"?

Hi,
With the sump kit installed, the 9010 (it comes standard with the 9010, not the 9005), the skimmer can operate submerged in water 3.9" to 11". The pipe on the sump kit keeps the water at a perfect level for the skimmer, as long as the sump water level is between 3.9" and 11".

The 9010 is 16.8" tall. You would need another 3.25" bare minimum to remove the cup. A little more would be better, I would say 4" is comfortable. So if you have 22" above where the skimmer will sit in the sump.........you should be fine. Even 21" would still be fine IMO.
BUT..........I am not sure if the "suction cups" mounted to the bottom of the 9010, using the sump kit are calculated into the height specs ??? If not they would likely add about .75".........you should still be O.K. with 22" of height clearance.
You wont be sorry with this skimmer ! THE Best and easiest skimmer I have ever used. Plus its VERY quiet!

Ok - Its installed in my main tank using the rails and its starting the breakin period. Right now the screw is out a good amount to get the bubbles about half way up the cup. How long does it normally take before it starts creating dark bubbles and skimmate? Hours? Days? I am going to have plenty of room in my sump as I will have about 6" of clearance to remove the cup.
