UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

As of today...

phos 0.09- hanna meter
alk. 6.5 lamotte -out of a cold dark jug... light doesnt effect alk., does it??
Low on cal test kit... will test when I get another kit...

I dont mind making up where the levels are off to save on salt and to keep from having to make my own water...

same here. i think i will start treating with GFO prior to using. also bringing up the alk and other values too.

re: process

re: process

Don't think the process to filter the water has changed...could it be the water they are taking in from the ocean has been altered?

I am upgrading to a 125G tank and will be going to UCSB in the next couple of weekends so am wondering if the water conditions have been altered.

just tested the recent batch i got last saturday.

phosphate 0.09ppm
dKh 6
Ca 400
Mg 1350

i didn't test for nitrate or anything else.

aside from low alk which is cheap to fix... thats not bad at all....

I don't understand why its so inconsistant... My corals seem to like it, thats all I care about...

Who knows. Maybe a whale floated by right before you filled up :D

We have a van now. Maybe I can fill up all my containers (instead of just 8 with the Civic) :D

Myself and other local reefers have stopped using it due to its low quality. We just don't understand why the quality has gone down for us, while others say it fine. Can anyone relate to this?

When your target phosphate level is <0.03 and your new water reads 0.09, you're kinda stacking the odds against you...

not really a tough choice for me, even with the 100 mile drive one way. i can get 1100 gallons, i can walk on the wonderful beach at UCSB, have lunch with a friend in Ventura. as long as i have my big truck i will keep going.

i look at it this way. i have mechanisms in place to export PO4, and i am working to improve those and make them even better right now.

if you do a 10% water change that makes your dilution 0.009ppm in your system from your water change. that is better than your system water.

you are not changing all the water in your system.

the flow through system at UCSB would/should have more issues from PO4 than we would.

i would look elsewhere as to why you are having problems.

Maybe the standard tests for aquarium caretakers isn't enough for knowing what is "wrong" with the water. I havent got a feces or crude oil test kit yet. I haven't figured it out and neither have my friends. There is always a cure for PO4, but why start with a high level of it from the get go. If it works for some, great. But not all things work as planned in this hobby. Until then I will not use it. Using my personal RODI unit and synthetic salt works best for me and my keeps my reef happy.

you are the one that stated PO4 as the issue. that is what i addressed. of course there could be poop or oil that we don't' check for. if that is the case the whole marine science dept is at risk.

what kind of decline do you and your friends see happening to your reefs that you attribute to the water?

the PO4 issue is easy to fix, as is the low Ca and alk. the cost is only a fraction of RO/DI water and salt mix. i also run carbon and ozone on my system 24/7.

This is only true if my tank water reads 0 po4. All I know is that my ca., alk, mg., etc are always on point. My po4 is always WAY too high. even if my po4 were at, say, 0.15 and I do a 50% water change... using make up water with a po4 reading of .09, that will bring my water to what, .12?? Thats just not good enough for me.

Now, if my po4 was at .15 and I did a 50% water change (I never would, its just an easy figure to work with) with make up water that reads .01... well, you know what Im saying...

All I know is that Im a 10 minute car ride from the tap. If I didnt think there was a problem with it, OF COURSE I'd continue to use it!! The fact is, besides the po4 issue, my growth and color should be great... I wish that was the case...

Ive been using that water for close to 2 years and Ive always had high po4. If the salt mix I just made lowers my po4, increases growth and improves color... the problem is obvious...

I guess we'll have to wait and see......................

please do keep us posted. do you take pix of your tank?

my point is still valid that a normal % water change will lower your PO4.

eric Borneman in his book Aquarium Corals says that PO4 up to 0.3ppm is ok. i think others might say 0.2ppm

still less than 0.09.

anyway i will be anxiously awaiting your post in 3-4 months.

i am still not sure what kind of decline you are experiencing. brown corals, no growth, death? what?
