UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

Have you guys contacted the reef abou using their hose? They are located down the road closer to the ocean. They normally have the gate locked but maybe if you went durring a decent hour durring the week you might get lucky. Just a thought. I agree the cost of salt does suck but that's why I grow corals to offset the costs.

I don't see any way to drive in there. It's pretty blocked off from both roads. I suppose it's possible to get in there from one of the surrounding buildings (on foot), if they had any unlocked doors on the ground level heading out there. I don't have any classes in the 2 buildings around it so I'm not really familiar with the setup. I will say, even if you managed to get in there, the whole area is like a construction zone, so I think someone would probably kick you out pretty quick. I'll update if I see any changes.

Is there any update on the UCSB NSW? Just curious, as we are about to start a new 120g, and will need about 200gal for the whole intial setup..>Gonna get expensive.
Thanks

I was planning on driving up there this weekend to get some water, but I've never been there so I need t know as well before I drive up there.

So Ryan, please keep me posted.

thanks.

I think the only way to get water is call up the prof that runs the lab down the road (close to the beach and lagoon).

that's what was I wass wondering, and will do some research this weekend, and see if we can get a contact name and number, or email. If anyone has any other ideas let me know.

I did drive by there this evening, and the construction is still dirt....

I will let you all know if I am able to find out anything else.
Thanks
Ryan

The Scripps water is located at scripps pier just north of La Jolla shores, and south of Torrey Pines. Theres a hose at the start of the pier, you can drive right up to it. I used it for many years until I moved to the desert. DO NOT COLLECT WATER DURING RED TIDE!!!

Alright, just got off the phone with one of the guys that work there and it's true that they no longer offer a spigot to the public until the construction is complete. His best case scenerio to get it back up and running was a couple months and worst case was a year and a half. I'm gonna get in touch with the project corrdinator and see if I can get exact dates as to when this is going to happen.

Good Luck.

As far as contacting Steve at the REEF, even more good luck. Took him about 6 months to answer my Emails when I was setting up a tour of the water plant for our club.

Shure would be nice to get water again as I'm redoing the 400G monster. I'm mixing water now and starting to get Hair alage that I never had with NSW. And I haven't added anything to the tank in a few years, just ASW for water changes.

I didn't get a number for Steve, I got one for Ray, the project manager for the construction. Which I haven't even tried to call him yet. I may get to it tomorrow. Ray should be able to tell me when they will be getting the spicket back up and running again for the public.

Any new news?

I'm filling up the 400 and it's getting expensive. 45 dollars for enough salt to make 150G plus the water.

It was only 20 bucks in gas to go and get 300G.

I've got a RO/DI. Makes 100 GPD. Still takes a few days to make several hundred gallons plus the cost of teh water. ;)

I'm using coralife salt right now as that's the cheapiest petsmart sells. But they only have one bucket at a time.

Wow.. This sucks guys. Maybe if someone can convince the REEF folks to fill up a big tank and truck it down south... could be a donation or two in it for them.

Ray, any news with the MASVC guys? I lost Scott's info but he seemed pretty open to letting club folks fill up with the 2" spigot.

Why can't you just use water off of the beach area?

Why can't you just use water off of the beach area?

As long as you use the sand filter for the pool, I think it should be good enough. Sump pump it through pool sand filter should work.:spin3:

You may joke but that is exactly what UCSB does to the water before they use it. Only their's is a lot bigger and about 30+ years old. ;)

hard part is collecting 300G of water from the beach. :) That's a lot of 5 G buckets to carry. ;)
