UCSB Santa Barbara NSW Natural Sea Water...

i am in the planning stages for a new >1000 gallon system. one of the things that will make it possible is the continuing availability of the UCSB NSW. it is a bit of a drive for me to get but the occasional trip there with my pickup will carry about 6-700 gallons. so for a tank of gas it is worth driving from LA to get the real thing and for free. i hope this resource never dries up.

just because there's NSW in santa barbara, I wanna move back down there =) Montecito seems like a quaint place, though the houses there cost more than all the houses on my block cost together.

The M-Tank is really nice, quality is fantastic, only problem is it's too narrow which is the only gripe other than the center brace ;)

Mods a plenty, I have a 70watt HQI fitted into the lighting fixture to replace one 55 watt PC, a 786gph sump return that puts the water level almost to the top (waves hit the lip sometimes, lots of salt creep but it's great), got rid of the trickle filter (while it was sweet and did a great job, the possibility of the sponges traping nitrates all the time etc. wasn't the best, also more water volume by filling up the entire compartment. I also threw in a spray bar and a seio 620, so I have about 40x turnover. Pretty fun, but too narrow!

Where's Steinhardt Aquarium? EDIT: Just found out it's in SF. gotta check it out, it's only 20 min away

wow, I'm down at UCSB right now (just took the LSAT here on Monday, whew) and I went to checkout The Ocean Floor nearby at the Camino Real Marketplace in Goleta, and OMG i have never seen such a clean fish store in my life. Most of it is saltwater, and the people there are friendly and helpful. They have super clean tanks, all built by Clear for Life, and they are free of dead stuff. Not much in terms of SPS but a lot of good LPS and some neat softies including a green toadstool.

They also had a really small red angler for a great price, $69.99. It's definately a young one, small but looks real healthy. They have a few fish I've never seen before in real life, like a circus goby, that red angler, and a few tomini tangs.

Their selection isn't big, but whatever they do have looks great! LR is a bit ugly and pricey, but hey looked pretty good nevertheless.

Gauging by the price of the angler, they are a reasonably priced place with a clean layout and worth the visit next time you come get some UCSB NSW.

They're open until 8pm!!

I am sure that you now realize that Steinhardt is in Goilden Gate Park but may be closed since I read major renovations being done.
I am close to Goleta. What is the street address for this LFS you are raving about. Any pictures of the M-Tank?

the ocean floor is in the costo/home depot shopping center over by compusa. they used to have a web site but i guess it's shut down.

They should be able to keep a site going with the prices they charge for some stuff. Nice store, and I've bought a few items from them, but not for the reefer on a budget.

not for the reefer on a budget.

very very true. thats why i've swiched to mostly online purchases.

Just a little heads-up from someone on campus everyday, this weekend is graduation/freshman move out weekend. unless your in desperate need of NSW, i'd stay away from the traffic and stop by on monday. have a great (hot) weekend!

Yea, I noticed that last night (that's why I went around midnight) and there were still lots a people around.

I must say, it is REALLY nice to have that for public access, I do appreciate it. :)

i too really appeciate it. the availability is a big factor in my tank upgrade plan. i get about 650 gallons in my Ford F-250. i drive slowly and leave a good distance to the cars ahead of me on the way back to los Angeles.

Just wanted to say that I have not seen the hose laying on the ground at UCSB in a while. Thanks to everyone for keeping it neat.

FYI There is a lot of construction on the access road to the NSW. Roads are narrow and bumpy for those who use larger vehicles and open water containers :D

I second the thank you from Dave!
also i'd stay away from the east entrance from about 4:15pm until about 6pm, as the narrow one lane with a stop sign is really causing a traffic jam. weekends (except when orientation and move in occur) are your best bet. happy reefing with beautiful UCSB NSW!

This is a little off topic of ucsb and more on the topic of sb's lfs's..as some of you know i have worked at The Ocean Floor for more than two years now and local lfs's for the last 5 years. I will be leaving the ocean floor to go and be a tsr at bargan network and a teller for pcb...all the while i am a student..anyways that is nether here nor there..i wanted imput from customers who have scene the pond remodel and what you think?..i know it looks like crap right now but were working on a second date for final deconstruction. that pond was built like a bunker the original owner didnt want it to go anywhere lol. so lets have your imput?
