"Unexpected" picture thread

Yes, you can use anything you want, we had a HDR last week.

Jay, I'll take over for you. I'm still having fun. Music huh???

Thanks misled.

I realize this contest is just for giggles. But to say you did not use photoshop except for contrast is just untruthful. There are many things in his shot that tell me the mouse was placed on the picture. Eye glare of the cat, eye glare of the mouse, lighting on mouse does not match the rest, flat head of the mouse, left front foot-straight line on bottom, grass blades do not match and a few more. If a man is to be taken by his word his word must be truthful. You guys and gals have fun.

wow! OK. Give me some time and I'll post the sequence. Think of it like this. The cat had already captured and injured the mouse. he was laying on top of it as a matter of fact. When he got bored, he got up to "play with it" The mouse was trying to be defiant in this picture because he knew he had no where to run.

since im a late addition to this competition, i didn't want to rock the boat and blurt out what i was thinking the whole time...call me a chicken hahah

you 100% sure it's a real shot??

if 'shops are OK, i'd have put this on up for sure! lol

Please be careful of accusing anyone of "cheating" when you don't know them or their skill level. OR their luck
In this case, theres very little luck or skill. My barn cat is a mousing machine who goes into the woods, catches anything smaller than himself including rabbits and takes them to (literally) the geographical center of the lawn, lets it loose and dares it to make a run for it. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING gets away. I am the only occasional savior of these vermin.

Heres the sequence of the above TRUE IMAGE

Original

I accept your apology ;)

A couple other fun ones. Well their fun in a sick sorta way.

By the way, Im pretty dang good with photoshop :) If I was gonna do something like that it would have been a lot more theatrical!

let me tap into your dang good photoshop skills and ask a couple of questions

1. In your first post of this the mouse had a toe, in your original the toe is gone. Where did it go?

2. In your first post the top of the mouses head is flat, now in the original it is blurry. Why did that happen?

3. The straight lines that appear in your first post are now blended in the original. How could that happen?

I personality do not care whether you altered this photo or not. Not sure what camera you are using but if you take your first post and blow it up everything I stated earlier is easily apparent. Just out of curiosity I would love see the full original without the extremely small image required to post here. 96 pixels just does not cut it. No hard feelings but I am sure I am not the only one to question it. Take Care.

Untouched original (cropped)

May I suggest an appointment with your optometrist?

I don't know what else to say to prove this wasn't touched. The shadow highlight touch up I did (which I admitted to) might be messing with your eyes.

I am actually flattered that you think my photograph is too good to be true. Its quite a compliment ;)

PS Id be happy to email you the RAW Nikon file for you to inspect. I shoot with a D7000

A Nikon...that explains it. Just kidding of course. A long and fun argument as to what is best Canon vs Nikon.

Whats funny is, I see this scene all the time. The cat is a monster and has a bad reputation amongst the rodent community here. I could get a similar photo every single day.

I actually take my photography quite seriously and very willingly divulge what Ive done (or not done) to my pictures. So I get a bit defensive when someone calls me out on my work.

Apology accepted ;)

Funny you should suggest this, a good friend of mine is an eye surgeon, ophthalmologis, also a photographer says my eyes are perfect. Go figure. You guys and gals have fun I have to check on my new kole Tang.

The SOOC image looks better (and more believable). When you brightened up the mouse, it looked like it was just pasted, lol :D

That was a sad scene though.. I feel so bad for the mouse. Poor helpless fella couldn't even defend itself :(

What's unexpected to me is that xtm was able to get a focused shot of birds in flight manually!! :lmao:

I've been shooting more with the Df and AIS glasses lately. I think I'm turning into a hipster :D All manual baby!

I got to this kind of late, but in the "Melancholy" thread I didn't alter my pic at all. I shot it with a T5i and used the "Grainy Black And White" artistic setting and 100mm f/2.8 macro prime lens, staying back about 20 feet from the subject to get my field of focus.

I don't even have a program for post-processing yet. Still shooting in JPEGs.

Anyway, music should be a fun one. I won't be able to partake but the results will be fun to see.

Best way to shoot RAW and fully manual.

if it wasn't for the fact that my dane boy would have your cat for lunch, i would pay you well for the use of him for a few days!

This cat has a history with big aggressive dogs. He has a somewhat unhealthy case of self worth. LOL I imagine the scene with him and your dog would be a bit like my picture here. LOL!

I have a habit of underexposing ALL my shots. When in manual, I will shoot anywhere from 2 to 5 stops under exposed, intentionally. When in AP I will have my exposure comp two stops down. I hate hot spots or harsh light in an image. They don't happen that often, but when they do it can ruin the image. The darker exposures can ALL be recovered in PP. As you can see the whole sequence is a bit dark. The image I used for the contest was put through one round of exposure compensation to bring some soft light throughout the image. to be honest I did not intend for it to be a very serious entry, let alone win the weeks contest ;) so I only spent 10 seconds cleaning and cropping the picture.

I agree the scene is a little twisted. I actually wanted to capture a photo like this for the melancholy assignment, but that week got away from me.

If it makes you feel any better, this mouse lived to die another day :) The funny thing about Jelly (my cat) is all you have to do is say his name and he comes purring to rub your leg. I pick him up and he forgets all about his previous shenanigans :) :)

It's interesting to me where peoples' sensitivities and image priorities lie. I agree hot spots can be inordinately distracting, and harsh lighting can negatively impact an image.

For me, doing many acro macros, I feel I often need to let the bright acro tips blow in order to have sufficient exposure to make out any detail in the rest of the image. To expose so as to not blow out the tips would, imho, result in an image which would have reasonably exposed acro tips floating in dark space. Cool from an abstract perspective but feels fundamentally underexposed to me. I don't really want to be tweaking each acro tip manually during post.

I've also read about shadow obsessed photographers who recommend over exposing a stop or two as when they dial that back during post, they achieve greater shadow detail than if they underexposed the image and pumped that up.

Thanks for sharing your concerns and techniques Jay.
