Used Vortech or 2 jabeos?

It's finally dawned on me that my plan to buy 2 rw8 wavemakers is barely cheaper than picking up a single used mp40. I'm guessing even a used Vortech would be expected to have a longer life than a Jabeo (really, really not looking for a flame war here... Knock offs absolutely have their value and I get the attraction to them). Would a single mp40 be good for a 75g reef? Do in have anything to fear buying used? They seem to go for around $200 from I've seen for the older, still wireless model.

You may want to look into the cost of maintaining the wet side of the MP40 and how often you will need to replace it before you make your decision.

Two RW-8's cost $168.99 in Canada, and prices *should* be a lot cheaper than that in the US.

I have not owned MP*'s, but the Jebaos I do own have exceeded my expectations.

It seems like 9/10 people that talk about having Jebaos also talk about having problems within the first year. I wouldn't personally put anything on a reef tank with that kind of failure rate. As with most things, you get what you pay for.

Not a fair comparison as stated

RW-8s compare in performance to an mp10, not an mp40

But a single NEW RW - 15 would outperform a single USED mp40 at half the price...

If you do decide to go with a used mp40, make sure you get to see it - and HEAR it - in action first before you buy.
Things to look for are noise from the dry side, due to worn bearings; noise from the wetside due to worn shaft washers and retaining ring; make sure the controller cable is not loose where it connects to the controller. Also, let it run full power for 5 minutes. The motor will get very warm to the touch, but if it gets too hot to keep your hand on it then avoid that pump...

I know the WP series have a bad failure rate, but isn't the verdict still out on the RW series? or are there already failures at the same rate as WPs?

You can get a good used MP40wES for about $280-$300.

I have had Jebao WP25's and WP10's.........they work well, but the quality is far far from the Ecotech. I traded the WP25's for WP10's, and then one of the WP10's died.

I recently picked up a MP40 for my tank, but just trade that for a pair of MP10's. 2 pumps always give better flow then just 1.

I agree two pumps are better than one, but my RW8 is louder than either of my MP40s. In pulse mode the RW8 is noticeable from several feet away.

Depends a bit on how old the vortech is. Personally I'd not buy any kind of pump that is more than a year old - otherwise you run a significant risk of just buying someone else's problems. Vortech is a far better pump, but it is also far mor expensive (initial purchase). So, if less than a year old, vortech; otherwise Jebao.

Really! My RW8 is essentially silent. You sure it's not the cord vibrating against something behind the tank?

Beware, I just sold some of my jebao's because they drastically reduce performance if they get dirty. They require cleaning every two weeks at least. With an MP40 you can take the wet side and clean it without removing any cables, etc..

100%Not true at all.

Stop bashing just to bash.

Jebao's, had them for 2 years now? Zero issues, even after a fishin line got tangled in one and stopped the impeller. (unwrapped and all was well again)

After owning both the mp40 and the WP-40's and 60's (haven't tried the rw's yet) I sold the vortechs after replacing a couple wet sides and have not had a single failure of any sort after 2 years with my jebao's. I prefer the flow patterns on the jebao's vs the vortech as well as the noise levels, my jebaos are virtually silent, the 60 on wave 1 max power has a slight hum to it but far quieter than the vortech mp 40 ever was. Just my .02 :)

went from 2 mp10 to 2 rw-8 and i think they both have their ups and downs. the rw-8 are completely silent, way more powerful, and are priced at 2 for the price of 1 compared to the mp10. the buld quality compared to the wp series is better. my mp10's (bought brand new) were both noisy from the get go. not bearing noise but a very audible hum from across the room at anything more than 50% (and yes they were aligned properly). the mp10 has better control and a wider range of settings, but cannot be pointed in any direction. so for me and my budget i chose the rw-8s. i purchased them through reefbreeders so i have a 1 year warranty with a US retailer. overall i am very happy with them and they do what they are supposed to, move water.
