Vertex Skimmer club

Joining the club on Wednesday! I ordered an IN-250 from Marine Depot for my 75 gallon reef display (50 gallon sump/refugium). May be overkill, but it was 30 dollars cheaper than the IN-180 ($259 compared to $289 for IN-180) at Marine Depot! Any thoughts why? Big upgrade from my Red Sea Prizm Protein Skimmer (not even the delux model)!

bill14 (and everyone else with the in180) on mine i situated the output on the opposite side of the skimmer from the pump. that way the water comes into the sump right above the skimmer pump and exits right by the baffle to go to my return pump. also the water level in my sump comes up to where the straight piece on the output is halfway submerged so i took the elbo on the end off. having it completely submerged like you have it causes backpressure in the skimmer and could trap air. if you take that elbow off your water level in the skimmer will drop. just my .02 cents and personal prefference.

I absolutely agree with everything you said. The pic I showed was the skimmer sitting in a tank of old water just breaking in a little. The output was submerged because it was making a racket sitting right behind my couch. :D I just got it installed in my sump tonight and have it exactly as you described. My skimmer input is nearly directly under the drain into the sump and the skimmer output is pointed toward my return and only half submerged. I'll try to get some new pics up soon.

Maybe they have Gen1 250's they are selling cheaper and the 180's are gen2. I heard someone else ordered one from MD not to long ago and got the Gen1.......

I hope that this isn't the case, in the description it states "Vertex IN-250 Gen 2 Internal Skimmer w/ 2nd Generation Impeller and Silencer." I would be mad if they tried to pull a fast one!

The skimmer arrived yesterday. It won't fit in my current sump so I'm going to get a 30 gallon breeder. I had the LFS order me one, the only problem is I have to wait until next Wednesday to get it. The skimmer is huge compared to the AquaC. In the meantime I have it in the basement for a vinegar bath.

Nice skimmer. I never use the plumbing coming out of the T. that way you dont get any back pressure.

I am sure you will like the product.

Thanks for the tip. What does the back pressure do? Also, where should the water level be, under the bottom of the plumbing or above it? I don't want to skim really wet.

Reading this thread and some other recommendations on the board has gotten me thinking;

I picked up an IN-100, Gen 2 about a week ago. It was (is) going to go on our newly setup 75 gallon tank. That is once I get around to plumbing in a sump (~20 gal). I've yet to take it out of the box.

I'm wondering if I shouldn't have gone for the IN-180. Is there really that much to be gained by choosing a skimmer which is rated significantly higher then the system?

Thoughts? Advice? (Cash Donations?)

FYI: Looking at a mixed reef, though predominately SPS. It will be somewhere around mid stocked with fish.

The 180 will be too much skimmer for your bioload. You won't have enough crap for it to build up in the neck for it to skim efficiently. The 6" body of the 100 will be better for you.

Could anyone tell me the footprint of the IN-100. Some websites state 8x10 while others say 11x13. This is crucial information as i have roughly a 10x11 space in my sump for a skimmer. Thank you.

Got mine last week from Aquacave using the Take $30 off coupon.

Here's mine but not installed yet not until I got my foam/rock wall done so it will be just one big work

The Gen 2 is 8 x 10

So if the Gen 2 IN-100 is 8x10 what would people suggest i get for a 40 breeder with a 15g sump? IN-80 or IN-100? Total water volume is about 50g. Tank is going to be mixed reef, mainly SPS and LPS.
