Vertex Skimmer club

bumb, i still can't get the water level to rise, but there is so much junk in the water, that i actually had foam that built inside the body all the way to the cup

I purchased the BB 3000 from Premium Aquatics. It will arrive tomorrow, I'm hoping to see a major difference vs. my stock Vertex pump. I've gone through two Vertex pumps already and four impellers because whatever the washers on the impeller shaft are made of wear down very quickly and cause the impeller to spin off balance and eventually ruin the pump and impeller. This also causes a noticeable decrease in the amount of skimmate produced.

Good choice

Just make sure you give the BB long enough time to properly break in before you make any rash judgements. Mine really only got some real nasty after 2-3 weeks of break in time, But you will actually smell the difference aside from seeing it.
One tip is the airline is much larger so you need to change the silencer hookup or just run it open to the air, That's what i did and the noise was not bad at all JMO

Thanks, why does the pump need time to break in? I thought that was only for skimmers because of the oils within the reaction chamber? I currently run my air tubing without the silencer and will do that with the BB as well.

Because the pump/Pinwheel all have to get the slime/bacteria coating to work
properly. It will work right off but will work much better in a few weeks (Trust me) I already miss my IN250 W/BB 3000 pump:(

Why did you get rid of it and what did you switch to?

I admit I haven't read every page of this thread, so my question might already be answered, I stopped following it about a year ago since my IN 100 was working great and I was pleased. I still like the skimmer a lot, but the pump went out (I've tried a lot of stuff to get it working again, but I think it's really shot) and I wouldn't mind trying a different kind. I keep seeing options for pumps for the IN 180 and bigger, but not the 100 Is anyone running a different pump on the IN 100 that was easy to install and works better than the stock pump? If not, does anyone have any ideas what might work for the IN 100 sized skimmer? Thanks, Don

i finally got my in100 tuned in right and its off producing foam... seems like im not gonna have to touch it for awhile, unless the pump goes out, which it seems like it will eventually. I'll just order a bubble blaster when that happens. Also just wanted to comment, the neck transition seems really perfect on these things the bubbles rise very smoothly

Maybe you should read the thread from the beginning, And you would see there is lots of good info and many people that have helped others here on RC and this thread. Seems you don't contribute much in the way of anything positive, Just want to complain about others and what they have or have not done for you. With 15 posts you, IMO got some nerve ragging about anyone on this thread since no one has forced you to be here in the first place. If you want help Read what others have already found out about the skimmer you have just bought. I am one of those that owned an IN250 and IMO they have Pump Issues and it is well documented on this thread, And the solution that we found is also on this thread. So i say help yourself or look elsewhere
for what we already know,Your choice but the people here are not the bad guy's.
Have a great day

Nicely put Poolkeeper. Yeah, this guy is barking up the wrong tree making absurd conclusions! lol Reefcentral is a online community where people share their experiences with others in order to help them in this wonderful hobby. Maybe RC is not for you if your going to go trolling around and talking down to others! IMHO Do some more reading and go on the forums boards and you'll see how much help people give. It's amazing what a little reading will do!

Bill your a real knee-slapper! Your telling me ever time you do maintenance on the pump I'll have to wait 2-3 wks "again" for the skimmer to work at peak performance. That doesn't seem right:confused: Fish and corals need the skimmer to work perfectly at all times to remove DOCs and if your saying you need to wait that long for a pump to work, not the skimmer then what's the point?? I heard this from the people at reefspecialty and don't buy it. In my experience and talking to others you need the skimmer body to form a slime coat not the pump...

OK, In my experience the Pinwheel needs to get that same slime coat. If you think otherwise i have no issue with that so what's the point? After a Vinegar bath the Skimmer and pump both need to break in again but will be faster than the original break in period IME but If you think different that's your prerogative and makes no difference to me.
Have a great day

Has anyone used the Vertex EX-180? I am looking at it right now and I like what I hear about the Vertex skimmers but I can't seem to find any information from people that have used their external line. Is there much difference (even improvements) from the IN line to the EX line? It seems to be more expensive than the IN line, just wondering what was driving that? Possibly a better pump?

Thanks.

yes, lol it might be a little while since i just lost my job 2 weeks ago, but a friend deals with them so gonna see what i can get it for. really looks the same otherhte the intake on recirc is on lower side. one of the vendrs here has them in stock afraid to post a link lol

I bought the EX-180, haven't set it up yet. The piece that holds the air tube on the pump was broken when I opened the box. Taking it back to the store tomorrow to exchange for a for one that is not broken.

Also it didn't have the conversion plumbing piece that it was supposed to come with so convert the plumbing from metric to imperial so I couldn't set it up anyways.

I'll try to post pics when I get it setup. If anyone else has one out there, let us know how its working.

Just bought my 2nd Vertex. I have the 2gen IN-100 and liked it so much I decided to go with the 3rd gen IN-180. The build quality is awesome as expected and the bubble plate has been given a face lift. It wont be in use for a little bit but when I do I’ll be sure to snap some pictures.
