VHO lighting for clams?

Reefer Jerm

My husband (Reefer Jerm) gave me one of his 55 gal. tanks a while back and ever since then I have wanted clams. However, Im not sure what clams I can have, I have read many articles and they all talk about PC and MH lighting but dont really say anything about VHO. I have 8 watts per gallon of ice cap VHO lighting over my 55 gal tank. What clams can I have under these lights? I plan on starting with a Derasa but really like the Maximas. If nothing else Jeremy has MH, so I will just have to sneak them in his tank :) I appreciate any advise anyone may have.
Thanks
Victoria

with vho's u could have Derasa's, Squamosa's and Hippopus.
so people will say that u could also have Croceas and Maxima's but these two wouldnt be getting the light intensity that they need to thrive.i would start out with a Derasa and when ur husband get's hooked it shouldnt be a problem getting a Maxima into his tank.

I have to agree. It it possible? Yes....I've seen people keep really nice SPS and Clams under VHO. It it the reccomended best light for their needs? No....MH is the clear winner there. Start with a derasa sqquamosa or hippopus...they would love the VHO.

A store by me has a 14 year old maxima in a 125 gallon with only 330 watt vho. Most people wont believe that one though.

No, a lot might believe. VHO is possible for clams. Just not the best light for higher light clams to thrive.

If you want to win a race MH lighting is great. If you want to have a healthy clam VHO's will be fine but slower growing. A more important factor would be the water chemistry and general hubandry
