Way to Stop Global Warming..

The last ocean "adjustment" idea I saw was to add vast quantities of iron to spur algae growth.

Luckily, I doubt anyone will ever be able to gather and focus the political will and $$ necessary to pull off either of these geoengineering schemes on a globally hazardous scale.

Hmmm, let's examine the thinking here:
"Adding large quantities of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere had unintended consequences that we don't like. To fix the unintended consequences, let's add large quantities of [lime/iron/whatever] to the ocean."

If action x produced consequences y(intended) and z(unintended), what makes us think that action X will produce consequence Y(intended) without Z(unintended)?

If they add too much at one time the precipitation event would look like this.

I just don't see it as a good idea.

I'm with KarlBob and Denny.

That is a very very BAD idea. Reminds me of Will Smith's blockbuster last summer. Can you just imagine the consequences if something were to go wrong? Too many variables. Heck........a lot of the ocean is still unexplored with all sorts of unknowns.

Does not surprise me that an oil company supports it.

First of all, thank you for talking about the proposed ideas, and not going down a political path.
That said, I'll be following this thread because of it's potential to turn into a political powder keg. I hope that just knowing I'm here will make people tske a second look at their posts before submitting them.
Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

No wonder there are more people than ever, the undies keep getting easier to take off. So global warming is also contributing to the boom in the human population?. Whats wrong with that?

Really?? Where :) I'm dying for some good reading :)

Here is one that probably went on longer then it should have. At one point it was very interesting. It was so strange how it went from Coral keeping is illegal all the way to global worming and politics. I was really interested in the Coral keeping part.

The man is watching...:hmm6:

I do agree... I don't see how anybody would be able to calculate all of the adverse effects of dumping a bunch of chemicals into the ocean. There is so much unknown. At this point we know more about the surface of Mars then we do about the bottom of our oceans... (not a good idea to mess with)

So we can dump tons and tons of sewage and hazardous waste into the ocean everyday, but we can't dump something that we think might be helpful to the environment into the ocean?

I'm confused. I'm not sure this has to be an all or nothing process. If it proves to be economically feasible wouldn't it make some sense to test the process to see how it actually impacts the environments in which it is tested?

While nothing can beat changing the way we get and use energy, I think that anything that we can do to mitigate the effects that humans have already made on the environment should at least be tested.

I think that if we can dam up rivers to produce hydroelectric power, we can drop a couple of bioblocks in the ocean to see if it has a net positive effect.

As I understand it lime is Calcium Oxide (CaO) and alkaline. Ca and oxygen. It doesn't strike me as something that I would be too concerned about adding to our oceans.

Just my twisted two cents. - did I say that I believe in cruel and unusual punishment? Because I do!
