Wazzel's mostly SPS 60 Cube

Thanks. Yes I am. You are not holding you breath are you? I may get to poly the stand this weekend. Having three teen aged kids in band really cuts into the free time.

Last night I made a 40 min each way trip to listen to a 15 min performance by the two oldest ones. It was well worth the 80 minutes of driving.

Your kids are much more important, I was just curious. It'll be exciting to watch your upgrade develop from the beginning. :D

Things are coming around on the lower setting. My miyagi tort is starting to show the blue highlights. Both my purple corals (GARF bonisi and blueberry fields) are starting to get more purple tint. Same goes from my LPS. My pink and neon green frog spawn is pink and neon green again. Still looking for the sweet spot. I lowered the colored channels to 90% and dropped their ramp inflection points 5%. White I left at 45%.

Made a coral acquisition yesterday. Picked up a Chips from a coral show. A friend of mine actually picked it out and muled it back to town since I was busy with kids stuff.

After thinking about it for a while, I believe there was a flaw in my reasoning. I got good color from one unit at high levels so I thought I could keep the good color with 2 units because of the lack of coverage. Apparently the is more spread than I was expecting.

This is all just based on what I see happening in my tank.

So were you actually seeing the beginning of bleaching before you dropped your colour channel?

Its a shame the manufacturers don't gather the data to give us more precise lighting recipes for different sizes and depths of tanks. I have a hard time believing that they do not do their own trials in house.

Looking back, yes. It was real gradual so never really picked up on it for a while.

Doh! Sorry about that. You clearly posted that in the last couple of pages.

My apologies....

ETA - Why did you chose the Hydra 52's over the Radion's? Just curious.

More spread, 4 vs 2 clusters
Cost
Recommendation from a qualified friend.

I am sure they do some trials, but they are under financial constraints to bring products to market. They do not have the time/money to test products for two or three years like we do as hobbyist. That is not a defense of the companies, just the reality of the market.

The lower settings are really starting to pan out. The Blueberry Fields is starting to get its dark green base back as well as the purple tips. Going to let the changes I made on Saturday run 2-3 weeks then reevaluate. I made the same changes to the 26 over my frag tank and having a similar response.

Good news on the colors, your patience and attention to detail always pay off.

Being patient helps a lot in this hobby. Really liking what I am seeing in my frag tank. I got some nicer things that were not looking to good, that are starting to look real nice now. The things I am holding for the upgrade need to be moved around so they do not grow onto the rack.

The cost to set up a test bed is minuscule compared to the cost of bringing a product to market or the cost of the equipment to manufacture it. I'm certain that AI did validation testing before adding violet LEDs to their pucks. There may be other reasons they do not take the testing one step further. Its still a shame.

Regardless, your tank looks great and you seem to be slowly figuring out your lights and what is best for your tank.

The cost (lack of revenue) for not selling a product for two to three years can not be absorbed by most companies, especially small speciality companies. It is not the cost of the physical equipment. Not to mention all the man hours invested by us as a hobby group. Plus all the set up the lights are running over.

Thanks for the compliment. I wish I could figure out how to photograph my tank. The picture I post are not doing it justice.

What's you reasoning for lowering the blue/violet channels? Why not leave all the blue/violet channels at 100% and vary the white, red and green?

I was lowering just the white channel until it got to 50%. I do not want the tank anymore blue. Red and green are almost insignificant on their own. Lowering them will not noticeably decrease Par output. Same goes for UV and V. White is at 45%, everything else is at 90%. At my current setting the percent power output of each channel vs total fixture power is as follows

W - 35.71%
RB - 40.18%
DB - 10.71%
V - 3.13%
UV - 4.46%
R - 2.68%
G - 3.13%

My settings have me at 66% of total power available from the fixture.

I found your thread from your recent post replying to a keeping it simple post.

Really nice aquarium you have. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Mark, I have been following your post, I do first thing many congratulations to you for your patience and sharing of all your studies / test. Your results leave no doubt, be very good at what you're doing
I see you have a very helpful person, want to ask your advice how to set my hydra (size of my tank 39x19x21(h) and have 2 hydra 26 hd water above 11 ").
The population which is still to be little and mixed-lps sps (after increasing SPS) considering that, with your experience as a power to be the best setting for my hydra? Of course do a proper acclimatization.
Attacked my current setting.
I'm really very sorry for my bad English and to write in your post, but much hope in your help. thank you very much.

No problem. I am partial to my settings. Given your tank is almost as deep as mine and your lights are half the power you should be able to use my setting with out any issues. Over time you can adjust based on how your tank reacts. It never hurts to start lower or take a long time to acclimate. Just an FYI I run hydra26's with the same settings over my frag tank, which is a 20 long. The frags in it do just fine.
