Welp... This may be the end.

My A/C outdoor fan just shot craps today. Peeled it off and set a box fan over it to try and make it through, but I think the compressor died after the fan went out. Oh yeah and Vogel can't come til tomorrow at noon.

So I cut out all my lights and dropped a frozen gallon in the sump. We'll see what's left of my 210g on Monday.

That's an awesome suggestion, thanks! How hard is to add one temporarily? I've never used one before.

I haven't used it but it comes with a mag3 and tubing. I thing you just drop the mag and the return hose in the sump and turn it on.

You don't need to do any re-plumbing.

I'm in O'fallon IL if you need it.

Ouch, hope you can get it fixed quick. The rain just dropped the temp down to around 80deg out in St. Charles, hopefully some of that is headed your way. Keep the ice going as needed and run your leds, those shouldn't throw too much heat and will give a little light to help sustain things. Keep us posted and if things get dire I could probably throw up a temp 40b tank to hold things if needed.

Thanks all for the suggestions and help. I took mpcart up on his offer and the chiller has me down to 84 so far, so I may make it through this. Nook, if the parts for my A/C have to be ordered, I am absolutely looking into a window unit. Thanks again.

You compressor did not "go out" it only tripped it's internal over load.

If you don't mind having a pond in your yard, just take a sprinkler and aim it at the condenser getting as much of it covered as possible and turn the water on just enough to keep a good steady flow across your condenser coil.
This should keep you running just fine till you can get a fan motor.

You don't have to have the entire coil getting water, but the more the better.

If you don't have a "connection" on getting a new fan motor, PM me.

My neighbor across the street does HVAC, if you want I can ask if he's got one on his truck. But I'll need the info off your motor.

By the way are you sure the fan motor is bad and it's not just your run capacitor? Do you have a meter to check it with? I have a 5uf and 7.5uf on my van. So I say check that out 1st. If you need some help with that just let me know.

Ok, so time for an update. We spent the night with family and let the chiller do its thing. Just popped by to see what's what and... House - 92, tank - 80. I think I just sold myself on chillers.

No reason to have parts ordered, parts houses are open Tuesday

Thanks for the info. If I can't the parts on Tuesday though, the window unit may be necessary.

Here's what I got. The fan won't start to spin on it's own. If I push it it'll slowly ramp up to around half or less it's normal rpms and that's all it's got. Occasionally I hear the compressor hum for about 5 seconds but that's it and then it shuts back off. I left the fuses out all night and tried it again just now, same result on both parts. Yesterday I tried water on the coils plus a fan laying on top where the OEM fan belongs, but that didn't seem to help. Both the input and output had the same temp after about 20 minutes. If this doesn't require Freon, I'm pretty handy, but it sounds like there's more to it.

If the fan will spin at all on it's own regardless of speed then I would say there is a HUGE chance of it just being the run capacitor. (in theory of course LOL)
I'm going to be out for the next 3hrs or so, PM me your # I think we can get you fixed up today. I'll check my PM when I get back.

In the mean time, see if you can read what size capacitor is in the electrical section of the condenser.

I'm in Webster and have a window unit you can borrow. It's sitting in the shop but I'll blow all the dust etc off it so it's semi-clean.

Brad -

Glad the chiller is working for you. Keep it as long as you need.

My AC went out last year in the extreme heat and it turned out to be the capacitor. Easy fix. Good luck.

I started stocking capacitors for my system for this exact reason. Just like having an extra set of light bulbs lying around. Always seems to go on a weekend or holiday. Your outside fan issue sounds exactly like what happens when the capacitor is done. Easy fix.

But is sounds like the capacitor for your compressor could have went as well. My unit there was a dual capacitor one side runs the fan the other compressor. Under normal circumstances they don't go at the same time so on my unit we split them up into individual capacitors. No reason you couldn't get your hands on these today with as many HVAC guys we have in the club.

What he said :bounce1:

I may have a large chiller for sale soon if you want a big one? Your tank could be at 78 right now with no issues.

My A/C is on!! I want to say I was really blown away by all the support from everyone on here. I got through the night with the help of mpcart's chiller, diagnosed the problem thanks to u4ick and the others on here, and I even roused a helping hand from the infamous capncapo with a pair of brand new capacitors! Up and running only about 2 hours later than the "emergency response" ETA from Vogel, and a low-low cost of under $20, I am better off than I had hoped to be right now. If any of you guys need a hand, I definitely owe you. :)

Spot on about the capacitor, and I'll be keeping spares as well, now that I know. Thanks!
