What do you guys run in your sumps?

So I just had this sump built for my brothers 90 gallon tank and I was wondering what media I should put in it.

I am going to be running a UV, a dual chamber reactor, some cheato, and I was thinking about skipping the fuge sand all together....

what do you guys think and what are you running in your fuges?

Also, I was thinking about putting something in that center compartment (right above the eggcrate). What do you guys recommend?

Sorry one more question, what do you guys think if instead of a reactor I run media bags with GFO/Carbon in that center section that should have pretty decent flow???

NO FUGE it just adds dirt, plus it needs maintenance.

The media will always work better in a reactor but it also needs maintenance. U certainly can run carbon and GFO in media socks with great flow in that chamber and it will be a breeze to take care off.

if no plan for a fuge, or otherwise, then why such a big space on the left of return? reactors can go anywhere.

if your going to do anything on top of the egg crate make it rock

and on the left there how about we run a fluidized sand bed

Thanks guys. the left side of the fuge is actually the skimmer chamber for a pretty nice sized skimmer (octopus XS-160). The fuge would have been in the smaller chamber to the right of the intake but Ill probably just do the cheato?

I went ahead and ordered the reactor. They're really not that bad.

@jdantunes - is chemipure the equivalent of a GFO?

Matt, not sure how to do that (fluidized sand bed)? Sounds cool though.

Any thoughts on Miracle Mud type stuff? And the bio-pellets...anyone?

Yes, Jorge.

If you are going to be running reactors with carbon and GFO. It won't be necessary to use Chemi-Pure. I'm going to be finishing with my new stand next week and then I'll start building my system. I bought some mud for my refugium because I want to grow red mangroves in it. Click on the tab of information on this website and you'll find a section of articles about sumps and refugiums and what you can and cannot add.

Stay away from the bioballs please! There are times of releases of nitrates into your system and could bash your corals if you are specializing in those

lol...Ive heard thats a good thing to keep in there. Just not too much or too little. B/c if you have that going on then you have a problem!!!

i think i have the same size skimmer reef octopus xs160 awesome!!!
i run biopellets and hc gfo on the phosban reactors
no nitrates that my test kits can detect
i also have a filter sock and a lot of rubble
and an electronic auto top off
what size tank u got sorry im lazy

+1 on No Fuge.... To me its great and all but I think it's a relic of the past some don't want to let go, and not as effective as other methods...

My last few tanks have all been no fuge all my sumps are:

Excellent Skimmer
GFO/Carbon Reactors
2-Part Dosing Pumps

I haven't had any issues or felt a need for a fuge, especially since it needs maintenance!
