I have a cleaner shrimp in mine and while I haven't caught him digging into the acans, i've watched it steal food. I currently put a "cage" around my acans to see if keeping it out will allow them to recover.
This may be irrelevant but I had a few nice blastos. Then one day, I kept losing polyps one by one. Then I notice a crab I never seen before eating the blastos, and then it went after my frogspawn. It was a hitchhiker.
i thought about the possibility of a crab eating my acan but that would be unlikely because it was eaten from the inside out. the top layer of acan "skin" was intact and when i flushed it with water using a pipette, it was hollow and then guts started to pour out so i doubt it was anything that attacked it from the outside.
on the other hand, the acan in question has been in quarantine in my extra tank for the last few days and it doesnt seem to be getting worse!
i have seen my cleaner shrimp steal food from the acans when im feeding them but i just usually give them a huge chunk of food and then they usually leave them alone once they have their fill!
If the decline continues you might giving Interceptor a try. Interceptor is effective against parasitic arthropods, some of which can be reallly really small. Imagine an army of tiny crabs tearing at it.
I have not really seen RTN in LPS, so take this in mind.
However, usually in SPS, RTN starts in part of the coral and then spreads, until the coral is dead.
Your Acan looks like is has several separate and distinct portions that have died, while other portions in between the dead portions do not look effected.
I would not typically think of RTN with this symptomology.
I just had the same problem!! I threw away two of my Acans. The only thing I recall doing was epoxying one on the rock closer to the light. When that one didn't react well, I placed it back on the bottom. That one started to look bad and it sort of spread to another. I also have 2 other frags in there that are doing fine and all my other SPS, LPS, and clams are doing well..so I have no idea what caused it.
Tagging along....I am losing a Blasto Mussa colony-almost all skeleton in a 7
day period....had it for 2 months, and today another is receeding and I have taken it home to my 20 gallon in hopes of salvaging it. This leaves 2 left....
My Acan is doing well.....
check this link out... I recently lost a newly acquired favia and one night I spotted what seemed to be pods but read this article which talks about parasitic pods...
I fragged a small piece of the favia and its all i have now but its healthy...
great parasitic pods!!! whats next?? can someone pls discover a helpful pod that goes into our tanks and kills all the evil things that causes so much sadness...
I did a couple of iodine dips and FW dips and killed a lot of them but it was too late for the favia... The frag I put on another rock is fine for now, Im hoping it does good and in 4-5 weeks I can attach it to its old skeleton so it can grow over it
Here's a link to the thread, i stopped updating cuz it all died except for the frag
I read up to brads post...I am removing my cleaner shrimp because they have destroyed 2 colonies of acans i have. My pep shrimp are insanely aggressive and no matter how much i feed them, they literally dig food out of my black sun coral/ reg tube sun coral, my dentro's my blasto's...and especially my acans. One has already been removed tonight via trap i made. I sent the pep to the dungon, ie mantis tank. Now the even harder part is trapping the other pep. He's easily the biggest pep shrimp ive ever seen.
So as ive witnessed first hand. Id say it was them. Mine had the same kinda effect as u stated and showed.
Ive had something similar when i left sand on a acan for a few days without clearing it off. My damsel digs a fair bit and when i eventualy cleared the sand off everythings looked good then a few days later the coloured skin bit just peeled off.It was dead from the inside. Kind of hard to explain but similar looking. I actualy thought maybe the acan ate sand with some sort of parasite in it.It didnt affect the whole acan just a few pulps.
Eunice worm... 2'+ long... anyone want him???? lol... I feel better as I thought I was doing something COMPLETELY wrong. Oh, and the snails in that tank would come out of the water at night... probably why it happened in that tank and not others...
my healthy grown from 2 head to 20 colony just did the same thing.. inside out just like that. my healthy frogspawn also disappeared before the acan. Both instances I saw the pep shrimps eating at the tissue.. but did they cause it or were they just eating the left overs ?
all my sps are fine, candy canes haven't been touched either.
